I'm old and I don't know who Paula Cole is so I'll skip back to Tom Petty. People don't comment on their choices and if that's the rule I'll bow out. But I live less than a mile off US 41 and that's the way I've always heard the lyrics, since Tom Petty grey up in Gainesville. Plus I had an old girlfriend who picked up a guy in a bar and was surprised that he raped her. I don't think that's what this song is about but it always reminds me of her.
