Yep, their exclusive editions are the main reason to shop Target's CD section. They always include a couple of bonus tracks you can't get anywhere else.

The Avett Brothers are a good example of a Target exclusive CD.

The CD section has dwindled down in the past year to a rack of $5 budget CDs, mostly older albums and a few greatest hits, and a small line-up of new pop releases. You can guess their intended target demo for the section are older Boomers and younger Millennial women.

I wonder how they become the go to place if you want a CD from a major artist with bonus tracks and exclusive vinyl packaging?

Re: Target Downsizes Music Section Again

Probably took a chance on a Taylor Swift record or something a few years back and it happened to go well for them.

The whole media section at Target keeps shrinking. Less than two partial aisles of DVDs/Blus and a tiny bit for music (and most of that is vinyl). A surprisingly big section for books though.

I buy everything online...and buy vinyl. From target sometimes...they do ship and deliver pretty quickly.
But it's sad to see it diminishing in physical spaces.

Target was doing huge CD sales about ten years ago and formed a tight relationship with the major music labels.

I just picked up the exclusive deluxe version of the new CD from Rick Ross at Target. It's actually being carried in stores.

They used to have the best sale prices in the early 90s- $10.99 while the crappy mall stores were $12.99. They had sales a few times where ALL CDs in the store were $10.99 for a week, I cleaned up then.
