I wonder if he at least left his family a note. Too bad that he had to go out like that. Always a shame when someone commits suicide.

Unfortunate. Superunknown and Down on the Upside were big albums to me when I was around 10-15. It's been a long time. Will have to check them out again.

I haven't listened to a lot of them since then. But that's how it goes with most bands ... they have a few good albums.

It's so strange how someone can be so close to ending it all and yet they give off no indications of being at that point.

The fact he hung himself right after a show really puts that post show depression thing in perspective.

Wow, this is absolutely crazy. We have tickets to see them on Saturday night. Soundgarden was the headliner and they canceled the entire event today out of respect. I was pretty stoked to see them, would have been my first time :(. I did get a chance to see Audioslave though. Chris had an amazing voice and will truly be missed.

That might be what they're saying, but I think the more likely reason for the cancellation is that they would have had to offer refunds anyway, and they were afraid that too many people would take them up on that, and then they would lose a lot more money holding the show then they would cancelling it on 2 days notice.

Maybe he was diagnosed with some sort of fatal illness and couldn't face it. Then again, sometimes people just die.

Well, they actually have a song (I think on Superunknown) called "Like Suicide".

They tend to die especially when they wrap a band around their neck and apply pressure to the point of depriving the body of oxygen.

Chris Cornell will always be one of my favorite voices. I usually don't allow celebrity deaths to upset me too much, but this one makes me feel sick.

My friend is convinced that it wasn't suicide and instead was caused by autoerotic asphyxiation. I guess maybe we'll learn more in the days to come.

Soundgarden/PJ/Alice in Chains/STP is what got me into rock when I was in my early teens & I've remained a fan since (except for the poppy dance solo shit he put out years ago.) I played a song he did for the HBO show Vinyl called Stay with Me Baby today, & it literally had me in tears. It's some of the best work he's done. If you haven't heard it, it's on YouTube.

What the hell is your stupid point? I said maybe he committed suicide because he was facing a crisis he couldn't deal with.

In the footage ... Chris and the band were about to start an encore, and he gushed about how awesome Detroit fans had been, saying, "I feel a little bit sorry for the next f***ing place we play."

They were set to play Friday in Columbus, Ohio and Chris joked he'll have to tell fans there, "You should have been at that Detroit show."
Damn... That takes on a whole new meaning, doesn't it?

I somehow overlooked this until now, but Ian Curtis died on May 18, 1980.

That occurred to me as well when it was divulged he had a "band around his neck."

I think that the people who practice autoerotic asphyxiation put a belt on their necks instead of actually hanging themselves.

My friend, your post displays such a high degree of eternal stupidity that no further response to this post is necessary.

Just saw this. Not sure if it was created today or not, but it's pretty chilling either way.

There's a twitter movement to "protect Eddie Vedder at all costs."

You could add Scott Weiland to that at least.

During Outshined he was just kind of wandering around the stage, ignoring both the crowd and the band, then he engaged for a minute, before looking really wrong during the solo. Someone on another board said it looked like him on a Monday morning when he gets to work - he really didn't want to be there.

I've only seen a few live clips of Cornell in the past, but he was never this disengaged and disinterested....

Look at the expression on his face around the 1 minute mark. That is not someone who is happy to be on that stage. And, again, around the 2 minute mark. Like I said before, maybe that's just the way he performed live, but to me that really looks like someone who has already checked out, mentally and emotionally.

Well, in all fairness, Soundgarden has never been a very active band on stage. I have seen them twice about ten years apart and each time it was mostly just them standing around on stage and playing their instruments. The tempo of the songs languished and there just wasn't much energy. I think we are all looking for self-fulfililng prophecies here.

I don't really get that I guess. I mean I don't want anything to happen to him but a lot of these guys have had substance abuse related deaths (we don't know with Cornell yet but I wouldn't rule it out as a factor). Vedder doesn't have those types of issues that I'm aware of.
