This was pretty much my initial reaction. After seeing that video of him singing earlier this year, I am surprised he made it this long.

STP was a big part of my HS years, and I also like him in Velvet. RIP.

Core was one of the first cassettes (and later, CDs) I ever bought, or at least got through BMG/Columbia House. Lost interest in STP after high school but a lot of their stuff still holds up. Great music and a huge talent in his prime. Like others said, it's sad but unfortunately not surprising.

Re: Scott Weiland - Dead at 48

I saw 8 STP shows and 1 Weiland solo show over the last few years. Plus a book signing. A lot of great, great, shows and one 1 bad. I'm not surprised this happened. But it is unfortunate. One of the best front men of all time.

Re: Scott Weiland - Dead at 48

This is why I knew this would eventually happen. From an old article:

That night STP dressed as Kiss at their show and Weiland snorted his first line before going onstage: “The opiate took me to where I’d always dreamed of going. I can’t name the place, but I can say that I was undisturbed and unafraid, a free-floating man in a space without demons and doubts.”

Tiny Music was always my go-to STP album. Listened to that so much in my early teens.

Hope he enjoyed the drugs.

Re: Scott Weiland - Dead at 48

Saw STP 3-4 times, usually at the KROQ Weenie Roast and at the Family Values Tour in 2001. That FV show in Anaheim was phenomenal and Aaron LEwis of Staind and Chester from Linkin Park did some songs with STP. STP and Scott were in fine form. I had seen Scott a few times up close as he was going to court with his sometimes lawyer Mark Geragos to the Pasadena Courthouse when I was at the library. Dude was really petite. I guess he had the junkie glow.

I never did see Velvet Revolver live but always wanted to.

In any event I will be spinning my copy of Purple today.

Re: Scott Weiland - Dead at 48

Although not my favorite band, STP did put out both my favorite album (Core) and favorite song (Interstate Love Song) of all-time. That being said, I am not all beat up about this news like I was when Cobain bought it. I guess since the band is long since dead anyway, plus I never expected him to make it this long.

Sad, but not surprising news. Was, and still am, a big STP fan. Liked Velvet as well. Location where he died is < 5 miles from where I live. Sad news all around.

I was surprised for a second and then I remembered this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFBR8EnlKJw

of his new band performing Vasoline mixed with footage of STP.

Opening track on their first album is officially autobiographical.

Re: Scott Weiland - Dead at 48

Like anyone else, I'm not surprised. STP was great, Velvet Revolver was great, didn't get into anything afterwards. It's too bad, as I don't like seeing anyone die at that age, but this guy had ample opportunities to get and sustain help.

TMZ reporting that friends and band mates say he was off the wagon and was on a crack cocaine binge.
Drugs (not specified) were found on the bus.

Bummer. Big fan of STP and have each studio CD. Have both VR Cd's as well. Playing them now.

I just remembered... the guitarist in the band he was playing with died in March of an OD:

Re: Scott Weiland - Dead at 48

Never knew a day after hearing "Wicked Garden" on the radio he would die the following day.

Weiland, Layne Staley, and Cobain all icons of the grunge movement are now gone.

STP was not my favorite band but "Down" and "Sour Girl" were some of my favorite STP songs.

Been listening to his stuff all day. Forgot how much I liked that last STP self titled CD. Better than the two that came before it. A return to form far too late.

That album was surprising solid. I wouldn't put it ahead of the first four, but far superior to Shangra.

I liked it much better than No 4. I personally think it's as good as the first 3. They all have a couple songs that don't measure up. But the best on all of them blend together well.
