"Classic" heavy metal music is boring as hell.

Pretty much every rock band from the 90's is overrated.

There are still a ton of amazingly talented bands making music today.

Ownership of music is all but dead.

and finally...

99.9% of artists are completely and wilfully ignorant to the business they are in. They complain about not making any money, but haven't done anything to earn it. If you expect to make money from your music, you ARE a business. Embrace it.

Long guitar solos always suck, and this is the most perfect guitar solo ever recorded (starts at about 1:30) :

U2 are awful.
Arcade Fire are even worse.

Definitely. As far as a better player, well Cliff was a unique player but I kind of see him as a Billy Sheehan type, more like "lead bass". I never liked his tone. Newsted fit the band perfectly in both tone and style.

Re: Make a Bold Statement About Music

The best Pink Floyd album is their debut.
I don't think this is very bold. It is, isn't it? Obscured by Clouds is by far the worst PF album (removing the post-The Wall stuff).

U2 are awful.
Agreed. Unlistenable and completely overrated. I also feel the same way about Bruce Springsteen.

The Doors were boring, tedious, and overrated.
I agree, there were moments - just not many.

While I personally can't get onboard with Piper being the best, it's not an uncommon opinion at all. Oh, and there's no way Obscured by Clouds is worse than More. The studio side of Umma Gumma is pretty brutal as well, but I suppose the live stuff balances it out a bit.

As for my bold statement...Outside of perhaps the Beatles (1964-1969) Elton John's output from 1970-1975 is the greatest 5 year run of any artist/band.

Re: Make a Bold Statement About Music

Most rap is NOT music.

In radio, Nirvana are the new Doors.

Bruce Springsteen is overrated. He is not the greatest singer/songwriter/musician/whatever of all time.

U2 got boring after "Unforgettable Fire".

"Love Shack" is one of the B-52s' worst songs and extremely overplayed.

The best current music gets little to no radio airplay.

The Pet Shop Boys are musical genius, who are largely ignored and get zero airplay aside from the 1986 version of "West End Girls" which ruined their original 1984 version.

Thomas Dolby is another musical genius who is largely ignored and remembered mostly for his one hit single.

The Grammy Awards have zero credibility. Imagine if the Oscars gave movies like "Armageddon" and "Transformers" the award for Best Picture.

Audiophiles are currently an untapped and ignored market for music. Multi-channel SACD SHOULD have been the next big thing, except that there was very little compelling material released on it.

Quadraphonic sound never should have died.

MP3s are the new Cassingle. (And that said, I'd still rather have a Cassingle, which I own zero of BTW.)

All songs by Rage Against the Machine sound exactly the same.

The song "Roll to Me" by Del Amitri is pure excrement- it's annoying, brainless and the vocals are poorly recorded.

The lead singer of Counting Crows sounds like Bobcat Goldthwait.

(This reminds me that I should start another thread listing "Songs I NEVER want to hear on the radio EVER again", though I might be too lazy to do that at the moment.)

Given that it counts out several of the best selling and most famous albums of all time in favor of a one-off, unique release with a different line up and a sound like nothing else they ever did again, I think it's bold.

I'll make the same declaration about '80-era Chicago versus '70s-era.

This is probably the single greatest rock n roll performance ever recorded.

Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices has written far more great songs than Pete Townshend and is barely known.

I know you don't really like stuff that doesn't take up a lot of living space, but what? That's like saying vinyl sucked because 45 RPM singles existed. Sure MP3's aren't my preferred listening option, but it's still cool as hell to have about 300 CD's worth of music on a drive the size of my pinky nail that I can plug into my car stereo & shuffle endlessly. Full albums too, not just the radio hits.

To contribute, here's a new one: Calling something overrated is not a valid criticism or a bold statement.

Re: Make a Bold Statement About Music

If Nirvana didn't achieve the fame they did, which had nothing to do with the music, people would have been a lot more kind to them in this thread.

Alice In Chains were just as great but without as much acclaim. But that doesn't sully the fact that Nevermind and In Utero are both still GREAT albums.

Re: Make a Bold Statement About Music

It's extremely possible that U2's music holds up better than anything else and, 50 or so years from now, they're almost universally considered the greatest ever.

Is that bold enough?
