Terrible news. I remember buying Reign in Blood when it first came out and have been a fan ever since. RIP Jeff.
Also, Piggy died from cancer, and Quorthon of heart failure (not sure if that was ever linked to any kind of substance abuse though)

And Chuck Billy, James Murphy, and Bobby Ellsworth have had some serious battles with cancer.

They definitely live a different lifestyle than most, that's for sure.
I was just laying out that some of those guys died from issues I wouldn't relate to being a 'rock star'.
I am quite amazed at the boys in Metallica. They have had a life of touring and we know James had substance abuse but apparently dealt with it. I guess they know priorities better than some on the rock n' roll game.

R.I.P. Jeff.
Thanks for some of the greatest thrash/metal riffs ever.
Reign in Blood is and always will be #1 on my list.

Well, this shoots down the whole spider bite bullshit theory.

Jeff Hanneman Was On Liver Transplant List When He Died
The Gauntlet can now exclusively confirm that Jeff Hanneman knew about his liver disease. Our sources have confirmed to us that Jeff was seeking treatment and had been sober for 2 months, a condition of being on the liver transplant list. There are four stages of liver disease, and Jeff was at stage 4 two months ago. He sought treatment earlier this year and and specialists informed him he needed a new liver and he was placed on a liver transplant list. Those closest to him thought with him being sober, he'd pull through everything okay.
Jeff knew he had a problem earlier in the year when he began getting drunk after a beer or two. This is a sign that the liver is no longer able to function and process the alcohol from the blood.
Tragically though, on Wednesday night, his driver drove him to the hospital and he died the next morning.
Slayer broke the news of Jeff's passing yesterday.

Those pics of the dudes with Slayer carved into their flesh makes me wish I was there with a bottle of peroxide. I thought Maiden fans with their entire bodies covered in Eddie tats were hardcore. Oh yeah, I hope the Slayer fans fuck up those Westboro pricks.

??? "bullshit theory"?!?? lol!
He WAS bit by a spider and almost lost his arm. He had multiple skin grafts and had to take medication and antibiotics for treatment.
It's TOTALLY LOGICAL to assume that it was the spider bite that did him in, especially when doctors who have treated this condition have said that many times it and/or the treatment of it causes liver failure.
What I want to know is that he must've been getting blood tests for the past 2 years while being treated. None of them showed any liver problems?
Also, official band statement has said that he was never on any "liver transplant" list.

Re: Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman dies at age 49
The official cause of SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman's death has been revealed to be alcohol-related cirrhosis. While he had his health struggles over the years, including the recent necrotizing fasciitis infection that devastated his well-being, Jeff and those close to him were not aware of the true extent of his liver condition until the last days of his life. Contrary to some reports, Jeff was not on a transplant list at the time of his passing, or at any time prior to that. In fact, by all accounts, it appeared that he had been improving — he was excited and looking forward to working on a new record

There was the member who pointed out that Jeff was a raging alcoholic. He was KNOWN for his legendary boozing: before the show, during the show, and after the show. And it carried on into his home life.

Gah, his arm looks almost as bad as the fan pics above -- I have to imagine his spider bite and ensuing treatments left him in an even less healthy state to combat his liver issue.
It still sucks that he's gone...

The bite was two years ago. They cut all the skin and muscle with the deadly bacteria out. The only thing after that was therapy to regain strength because he lost so much muscle, clearly on the bicep, tricep and forearm.
And yes, his boozing was legendary. He drank himself to an early grave.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a combination of alcoholism and the bite.
Alcohol abuse can make one more susceptible to necrotizing fasciitis, and the antibiotic treatments could have taken their toll on an already weakened liver and left him even more predisposed to further liver damage from continued alcohol use.
