Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman dies at age 49

From Slayer's facebook page:

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)

Sad news, I was a HUGE Slayer fan back in the day.

Was just listening to Decade of Aggression on the way to work this morning. Sucks. Slayer is one of my favorite metal bands of all time.

Goddamnit! I had no idea his condition was that bad.

I've been a Slayer fan since 6th grade. I met the guys during a signing for Divine Intervention. Met Jeff once at a metal show - he was a totally laid back, cool guy. Even though I've never been a huge fan of their newer material, I've always listened to them.

He also wrote just about every great Slayer track there is.

R.I.P. Jeff, and R.I.P. Slayer.

Horrible news. While I was only a casual listener, I always respected the role he played with Slayer. Huge loss for the music world.

I was a fan up to Seasons in the Abyss. Saw Slayer live couple of times in the late 80's and early 90's. Put on a hell of a brutal show. RIP Mr. Hanneman.

Wow, shocked to read this tonight, so sad. Thanks for so many killer riffs and being a regular guy. Slayer.

Metal lost a great one...

That flesh eating disease (necrotising fasciitis) that he got from a spider bite two years ago did him in. That fucking sucks.

He died of liver failure. The dude was a major alky. Fans used to joke about him being drunk on stage all the time.

The flesh eating bacteria had nothing to do with it. Fact is, Jeff was hardly clean-living.

Re: Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman dies at age 49

Here's an article from about a month ago:

http://www.metalinjection.net/latest...back-to-slayer

King uses some careful language in describing Jeff's recovery, too.

It's been a little under two years since Jeff Hanneman had to step down from his position as guitarist of Slayer, and it looks like he might not be coming back.

Hanneman was the victim of a spider bite that caused enough damage to his arm that he still can't fully play certain Slayer songs. It's enough to keep him sidelined for over a year, during which time the band got Gary Holt of Exodus to fill in.

In May of last year, Hanneman had still not yet recovered.

By the summer the band began writing new music without Hanneman.

Now, it seems that Hanneman might be gone for the long haul. In a recent interview with Metal Obsession, guitarist Kerry King basically said don't hold your breathe:

“I think Gary is in for the long haul. I haven’t really discussed it with him. But he keeps his schedule free when he knows we’re on tour… If Jeff all of a sudden came back in June, we would probably pay Gary for freeing up his time… But if Gary played with us for ever? I’m okay with that.”

What King is seemingly saying is that if Hanneman ever gets healthy, he'll be welcomed back into the band, but it doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon and that's a total bummer, especially now with Dave Lombardo not currently in the band, seeing Slayer with only 50% of their original lineup is no longer Slayer. It's, as my buddy Axl at MetalSucks put it…. seeing "Slayer."

Yeah, the spider bite was more than 2 years ago and since Jeff, whose known to have a drink or five, has lots of downtime, and in a weakened state, probably kept the drinking going through his recovery. At first I though that maybe his organs were also damaged by the spider bite, but that seems unlikely now if they're saying liver failure.

Man, I used to be a huge Slayer fan back in the days of my youth. I took an Italian class once with Tom Araya, super cool dude. Sucks Hanneman has left us. R.I.P.

Learned about this fast forwarding through the Golden Gods awards on axis, waiting for Danzig. Sad.

He was a heavy metal guitarist. 49 is about the life expectancy for people in that genre.

^ A lot of those guys couldn't exactly delay their death, though. Sounds like Jeff could have if he'd gotten some kind of help.

Not sure you can say the genre had an impact on these guys deaths ...

Dimebag got shot in the face at a show
Chuck Schuldiner had a brain tumor
Dave Pritchard had leukemia
Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident
Criss Oliva was killed by a drunk driver

Jeff's arm almost had to be amputated. He was in bad shape. Just the years of antibiotics alone could have weakened his liver.
