You have to be careful adjusting that, since if it's balanced to be too heavy, then it could damage your records.

I'd take it to a shop to have it looked at. Bring a "good" album and a "bad" one and let them troubleshoot it for you.

Interesting! I had thought maybe it was too light, but had no idea it could be adjusted. I did think maybe needle so I just bought one but when I used the old needle on some records it works fine; so its very spotty. I dont know what determines the skipping.

So... I kinda bought a lot of video game soundtracks lately. Still waiting for a couple of them to come in, but...

Furi
excellent synthwave. Should have it next week.
http://i.imgur.com/fYIZ3J5.png

Undertale
Pre-ordered last week. My kid LOVED watching me play this game. She loves just walking around in it, not doing anything (she's 3. she'll get there)
http://i.imgur.com/2cmYhq1.png

Ori and the Blind Forest
Amazing score. Still waiting for this to come in.
http://i.imgur.com/dHk1fMU.png

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
All the songs are fantastic, but Another Winter is the best.
http://i.imgur.com/td36VS7.png

Castlevania
mentioned earlier in this thread, I think. Quality is OK, but it has issues. Music is so iconic, though.
http://i.imgur.com/9qrt5Yc.png

Every DataDiscs release... I support these folks because their prices are totally reasonable for what they offer. No overpriced picture discs from this company. :)
Streets of Rage, Shenmue, Shinobi III
http://i.imgur.com/InaSv2W.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/AuehK2B.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/FOZ3Kqc.png

Super Hang-on, Streets of Rage 2, Out Run

Golden Axe I & II
http://i.imgur.com/4rnBg8A.png

... and a few more I'm hoping to procure in the next week or so. :)

Meanwhile, I've been listening to all my records in order, from A to Zed. I'm almost done the B's. :) My wife was ready to leave me about halfway through my 11 Autechre LPs/EPs.

Cool little video of Wilco's new album being pressed.

I also stumbled on this, the mastering and pressing of their Whole Love vinyl, which reinforces my opinion that Wilco probably puts more thought, love & care into their vinyls than most other bands/labels.

Have any of y'all changed the cartridge on your turntable yourself? How was it?

I'm thinking about upgrading mine. Should I buy brand new (I'm eyeing the Shure M97xE...) or get a used, but restored, vintage one?

Any suggestions?

Maybe it's just me but I can't imagine why someone would buy a used cartridge.

I've changed out the cartridge on my Music Hall MMF-2.2. The tonearm wires are extremely thin and fragile and I ended up breaking one of them. I was able to fix it with some solder and shrinktube but I'm wary of ever trying again. All that to say, depending on your table, just be extremely delicate at every step if you're going to do it yourself.

Also, make sure you have the right counterweight for whatever cartridge you get. The cartridge I changed to required a heavier counterweight than the stock one. YMMV.

Supermallet 09-06-16 06:11 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

If I need to change the cartridge I take it to someone I trust, either a local amateur who knows their way around turntables very well, or a shop and pay a small fee to have them do it. I'm too hamfisted to trust myself.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I changed a cartridge on an old turntable, but when I bought a used Technics 1200, I paid to have a professional restore it and install a new cartridge.

Dan 09-07-16 10:04 AM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Thanks guys. It seems fairly easy to do it myself on this particular turntable, so I might give it a shot. The folks at Uturn even shipped me a new counterweight and magnets (to add weight) for heavier cartridges, free of charge. I agree about being weary about buying a used cartridge. I just saw a local store that "specializes" in items that date back to the 30's, so I briefly considered it... but those are likely out of my price range anyway.

Anyway... I'm just going to bump this request again:

If any of you are currently in L.A., would you be willing to go to a specific store to pick up a specific record, and mail it to me in Texas?

It's exclusive to the store and it's for walk-ins only. I'd pay for the record + shipping + a little extra for the effort.

Please send me a DM if you can assist.

You know I'd do it for you ;)

If you're in L.A. and you can swing by this place (about 5 miles from Amoeba), you'd be my personal hero. I want it for listening, not flipping. You can even crack it open and give it a spin before you send it to me if you want. I just REALLY want it. :D

I'm a tech professionally, so I found the replacement quite easy. Now, I'm still trying to find the right cartridge. I have that Shure, and to me it's no better than the much cheaper Audio Technica AT95E (although I do like the brush). I plan to try the Ortofon 2M Red sometime soon.

Just got Manic's 2nd best album on limited blue vinyl.
Had to get it from Canada, as America can't seem to be arsed about this band...
It sounds amazing, BTW. It's the new remaster, and the vinyl is about as quiet as can be, especially for a colored one.

Does anyone ever run decent sales on new vinyl? I get most of my vinyl from garage sale hunting and from a cheap local record shop, so its hard for me to spend big dollars on new vinyl. But I'd like to buy some. Its just I never hear anything about sales. Anyone?

I couldn't agree more. Mine came today and my wife and I both commented on how great this record sounds on the very first listen.

I also got a bonus 12" and 7" in my package, along with several posters (on cheap paper, but still...free posters).

This was my first experience with Italians Do It Better and I am very impressed.

Recently found To Live and Die in L.A. soundtrack on vinyl. William Friedkin made a brilliant decision hiring Wang Chung to do the music for the film; it compliments it perfectly.

Anyone ever check out this store?
http://fridaymusic.com/store/

I am a HUGE Billy Joel fan & FridayMusic has recently reissued many (but not all) of his albums on 180g vinyl. I just found a brand new copy of River of Dreams on ebay & got it for less than $10. Even though I already own all of his albums on vinyl & know 180g really doesn't improve audio quality, a lot of them are either colored or translucent which might be reason enough to upgrade.

 one of my favorite soundtracks (and movies) from the 80s. I give the record a spin on a semi-regular basis. Incidentally, the movie seems to be increasingly televised on various premium channels. I often find myself tuning in for a few minutes - even if only for the music.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

What are some good inner sleeves to buy? I've got a bunch of records where the sleeves are torn (typically from shipping, it seems), while others are just cheap paper and mangled. I like the look/feel of the black paper sleeves with a plastic sort of lining on the inside (anti-static?), but that doesn't necessarily mean they're the best.

Also, is it a good idea to get outer sleeves for all of my albums, too? If so, again, which ones are recommended? I'm not a fan of the ones that have a sticky fold-over flap, for example.

Unrelated to the above, during my trip to Chicago last week, I hit up a couple record stores. At one of them, I came across an old copy of In The Court of the Crimson King. The sleeve isn't in great shape, but the record itself is in excellent condition. Hadn't listened to that album in over a decade, easily, but man... it's so good.

I also ended up buying two albums by a late-80's noisy British space rock band called LOOP. I had never heard of them before, but the little write-up the store had pasted on the albums was enough to get me to blind buy; not to mention the prices weren't bad either.
http://i.imgur.com/l50dnbc.jpg http://i.imgur.com/xeIqjC3.jpg

Here's the write-up (formatting sucks... grabbed it from the website, but it was on a printed card taped to the record)
Spoiler:
LLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPP! VVVVVVVVIIIIIIINNNNNNNYYYYYYYLLLLLLL!

HOLY SHIT. We thought this day would never come. Weve loved this record for a long long time now. When the CD reissue campaign went down a few years back all of us here at Permanent flipped our lids but we couldnt help but ask ourselves when will these most excellent records get rightfully reissued on wax? Multiple emails to the label offering to license a vinyl release on Permanent and 3 or so years of spinning the CDs and our personal copies of the original vinyl here we are ready to blow your minds with the first legit reissue of Loops debut LP Heavens End. Every time weve ever played this record for fresh ears inquiries as to what is was followed. Vinyl-only buyers splurged for the CD version. Its that kind of record. Itll be at the top of my (Lances) Best Reissues of 2012 list without a doubt. Fans of Spacemen 3 Jesus and Mary Chain and/or anything fuzzed-out feedback-laden repetitive psychedelic and heavy ABSOLUTELY NEED THIS RECORD! This may all sound like hyperbole but we assure you it is not. If you dig good music and you dont already own this just stop reading right now and drop this in yr cart. Therell be time enough for reading the back history when the dealing is done. Sceptics feel free to read Reactors description below-British primal psych band Loop was formed in London in 1986 by Robert Hampson on guitar and vocals and Beki Stewart (Bex) on drums. After finding bassist Glen Ray Loop signed to Head Records run by Jeff Barrett (Heavenly) and released the feedback-drenched 12-inch 16 Dreams. With the arrival of James Endeacott on second guitar drummer John Wills and bassist Neil MacKay Loop adopted a more primal rhythmic approach and put out their debut full-length 1987s Heavens End.The band hypnotized all with their discordant trance-like spell which served as an antidote to the prevailing trends in British pop at the time they resurrected the concept of loud out-there rock for a new era creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance loosely influenced by The Velvet Underground The Stooges The MC5 but retaining the avant-garde and experimental edge of Can Faust Neu! Rhys Chatham Glenn Branca and minimalist systems music. Live shows were revelatoryLoop pushed PAs to the very limit delivering a sonic pummel that has yet to be experienced since.Out of print on vinyl for the last two decades Heavens End is finally available again in its original format. Are you really still reading this description? Whats holding you back? Maybe you think this all sounds too good to be true...its not. Its all true. Even this part- harsh dissonance loosely influenced by The Velvet Underground The Stooges The MC5 but retaining the avant-garde and experimental edge of Can Faust Neu! Rhys Chatham Glenn Branca. Its all true. If you buy this record and dont like it well buy it back for $12. Hows that for a guarantee? If youre still reading this description trying to decide whether to pull the trigger or not I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly take a stress pill and think things over. Just buy it. You wont be sorry you did.

HHHHHHHIIIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHHHHHLLLLLLLYYYYYYY RRRRRRREEEEEEECCCCCCCOOOOOOOMMMMMMMEEEEEEENNNNNNNDDDDDDDEEEEEEEDDDDDD!

 yeah, a little over-excited, but y'know... both albums I bought are pretty damn good! I bought two other albums on Discogs this week. :) So yeah, check out LOOP. Good stuff.

Also, my request for someone to pick up an exclusive record at a store in LA still stands. I'll make it worth your while, etc. etc. Just hit me up if you can help.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

For inner sleeves, make sure you get polysleeves (that is paper on the outside with plastic liner on the inside). They're incredibly sturdy and IMO provide the most protection for your vinyl.

Also, if you're using outer sleeves, you can pack the record in the inner sleeve on the outside of the record jacket, all contained within the larger outer sleeve, to prevent the ring wear you see on a lot of older vinyl jackets.
