Re: The VINYL Thread!
Got my 665th album in the mail, if I did not already own it, I would go out and buy Number of the Beast for the next one.

Get Sabbath Bloody Sabbath instead.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I thought those kind of numbers would be something I would get close to...but since early March, I'm just shy of 100 albums now.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Hah, I meant wouldn't...instead of would. Either way, I've been super careful about what I've been buying and it's paid off because I regularly listen to my albums with the exception of maybe 4 or 5 stinkers I've picked up due to bulk sales.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Also, have any of you paid a lot for a record you really wanted a copy of? I only ask because there's an OOP Com Truise EP I'm really interested in but don't think I can fork over that kind of cash for it.

I might regret the money in the short term, but I'd regret not buying them when they're available in the long term if I never got them. (I hope my wife will also appreciate that explanation...) |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
That makes sense to me. I'm still kicking myself for not buying this EP when it was originally available, though it was about three years ago and I didn't think I would own a turntable at that point.
I went ahead and bought it for the same reasons you listed, I'd rather have it now than wait forever as it only increases in price further. |

I started in the 1970s (big break from 1990 to 2010 though)... so you are on a good pace compared to me :)
These days, though, I've been selling off the CDs to buy more vinyl. :) |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
I'm about to do the same with my CDs... They barely get any use, and after I saw that article on how CDs degrade in a relatively short time, I might as well.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
The only collecting part of my albums ( and by collecting I mean buying mainly to have an entire discography of a band including singles) is Iron Maiden, there are a few picture discs I had when they came out (paying probably $10 for them) that were lost along the way that I had to pay $100 to get back now.
I certainly have some dogs in my collection that I either bought recently at a 3 for $1 sale because I liked a song or two or 80s rock bands that I liked at the time, but now think are crap (though I did get rid of most, but not all of those) |

Yeah, me too, but I was well past your number in the 80's. I took a big break through the 90's/early 2000s, like most did, mainly because of the lack of availabity of albums being produced at the time, and because I had switched over more to CDs. My collection currently numbers in the thousands on both, but I stopped truly counting many years ago.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Got my Barnes & Noble order yesterday:
Megadeth - Rust in Peace Santigold - Santigold Com Truise - Galactic Melt Redux Grabbed the last one for my buddy as a wedding gift. Not bad for averaging about $13/ea. On another note, still haven't received the replacement spindle and belt from U-turn yet, kind of disappointed their wasn't more haste on their end to get it. After taking out the spindle last night, I cleaned the inside up (found a very small amount of black residue on the inside of the spindle) and it works perfectly again. |
Re: The VINYL Thread!
Got some awesome vinyl over the weekend. Trying to bulk up my jazz selection:
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else (1963 press - Blue Note) - with Miles Miles Davis - Milestones (2nd pressing, 1961 I think) with Adderley and Coltrane Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come (2nd pressing) John Coltrane - Olé Coltrane (1st pressing) John Coltrane - Impressions (2nd pressing) I also bought a bunch of sealed Nonesuch classical records, some Stravinsky, a copy of Berlioz "Symphonie Fantastique".

Re: The VINYL Thread!
The record sellers in my town (a store and the flea market sellers) have no concept of how to properly price used vinyl. There's no such thing as a $.50 or $1.00 album for them. Everything is at least $8.00 it seems.
They aren't any better about new vinyl. I make a point of very blatantly checking prices on my phone before buying any new stuff. I want to support the record store, but I don't want to support their price gouging practices. It's really annoying. But the prices for most new albums on Amazon are also crazy. Why in the heck is an album like The Division Bell going for around $40...? |

For perspective, these would be about $15 in my store. Elvis is a $5 record. Cars, B52s, and Genesis are $3 records, and Supertramp is a $1 record. Assuming they are all mint, otherwise 50 cents each.
Cars for me was the cheapest at $3 and with that you know there's an issue with it. It is slightly warped, but plays fine. Elvis was the highest at $10, I think its a trickier one to find. B-52's was $7 and it is like brand new. Even the sleeve is mint. Others were $5 each and are all pretty decent. Most of the stores here have similar prices. $4 and under you are taking your chances, but you might fine a gem. $5 to $9 seem decent and if its one that is easy to find it will be close to mint. $10 and above seems to be ones that are a bit more scarce. In my few weeks of collecting I have yet to see an album by Rush, Led Zep, Bowie, Floyd and of course, anything 90's. |
