Wow, I had The Zombies in my sights and was looking right at it before I left one of the record stores.

I'm digging that Halloween LP - didn't know Dead Waltz was participating in the RSD event.

I wanted the White Stripes LP but didn't see it at any of the shops I was at. I didn't get over to Amoeba, so that was a pass.

I do regret not getting the Cypress Hill LP and the name escapes me, but it was their landmark album. I was in 9th grade when that one came out.

While I do agree that it is mostly the Ebay effect, I would also say that 1000 picture discs of the Drive soundtrack and 2000 7" South Park releases are way too few for items that are supposed to be spread all over the US in shops.

By comparison, limited edition soundtracks/scores are usually in the 3000-5000 unit pressing range.

And another lame thing is that unset uniform pricing for items, allowing for gouging; makes it more of a collector's event than a music one.

The Drive is a good number. Its about the size of a typical Tyler Stout poster run. The regular and pinks will be out on May 26. That's the one you want if you are going to listen to the album. Now I do think another 500 poltergeists wouldn't have hurt. That one was tough. But again, I've heard the glow sounds worse than the reg.

CRM114 04-20-13 09:59 PM

I did a grab and run as I had lots of stuff to do today.

- Nick Drake "Nick Drake" - an exact replica of the 71 US release. Contains songs from his first two albums. Even has the bargain bin punch hole scanned throughout the gatefold and sleeve. Came with copy of record store poster from 71.

- Robyn Hitchcock "There Goes the Ice" - vinyl edition of Robyn's download only series with two new songs for RSD. 750 made.

- The Three O'Clock "Live at the Old Waldorf" - random neo-psych band from the late 80s early 90s. On green vinyl. Used to listen to them all the time and saw them open for REM back in the day. Hand numbered/1000.

- The Band "The Last Waltz" - 3 Lp set. Replica of foiled album cover. 5000 numbered.

- Low + Dirty Three "In the Fishtank 7". Gold vinyl.

Was interested in the Phish "Lawn Boy" release and the Captain Beefheart. No dice. The Flaming Lips release was intriguing but ill never have 4 turntables. I could only muster up two complete stereo systems. Really wanted that Lips release last year.

Yes, it's a collectors event. That's why many of the releases are numbered. The scarcity of a title makes it more collectible - the limitedness of an item is a relative number. Why is 1000 too few for an item they WANT to be scarce?

I went to two stores and both had the same prices. There's always going to be stores that exploit it. Bad karma.

gmanca 04-20-13 11:17 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I understand the collectable aspect of it, I'm saying that RSD is becoming more of a collectors event and eventually will lose its luster because of that. If you have more people coming, you have to increase the amount of items otherwise you're going to have people lose interest.

1000 for the Drive Soundtrack is too few when you consider that that means 10 copies for 100 stores across the US when I can think of at least 10 RSD stores in the SF Bay Area alone.

Sure I went to go check out the RSD store for records but I usually go to a nearby one on the weekend anyways. Only difference was that I didn't stand in line for hours to be the one of the first 10 people who could secure any title they'd want.

I got the Dazed And Confused soundtrack (on "herbal green marbled" vinyl, hand numbered of 5,000) and Big Star Nothing Can Hurt Me Now (also limited edition RSD colored vinyl). Both are pretty damn sweet.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

If the Drive picture disc is an absolute must have, check your store Monday. They were lost until Thursday night. Not all stores received copies and will receive later.

How about Patty Griffin's "Ohio".. which was limited to 500? I know, not as big of a name, but still. At least I managed to snag my copy (#125)!

The Coheed and Cambria disc is a Coke Bottle clear vinyl. Haven't opened it yet, but the pictures that I've seen look pretty sweet. I know there were other records that were also pressed in coke bottle clear as well.

I also don't think I will be opening the Rob Zombie RSD disc due to it being one of those discs that play from the middle on out. I do not want to master the needle placement on a limited disc just yet.

Got an email about the Vangelis Blade Runner vinyl - it's been pushed back again another week:

Vangelis "Blade Runner Original Soundtrack (180g Translucent Red Vinyl)"
Estimated arrival date: April 30, 2013

I'm not worried about it. I locked in the lowest price on Amazon for it, which is about $29, with tax and free PRIME shipping. Elusive disc charges almost $5 for media mail and I'm not sure if they charge sales tax. I'll wait it out.

Death Waltz did participate, but with 7", not LPs. However, that Halloween II LP is so impressive that I just ordered their Halloween III release from a seller on ebay.

I may go check out Record Surplus today, as they're running a weekend sale to celebrate RSD.

Eh, Record Surplus was basically a bust. They've gone downhill since the last time I went.

I did grab these since I was already there:

Donner Summer: Bad Girls
Warren Zevon: Self-Titled
X: Under The Big Black Sun
Sparks: Indiscreet

Can't wait for their release of the Fog. So far I have:

Halloween 2
Halloween 3
Prince of Darkness
Escape From New York
They Live

Without even realizing it, I don't have any of their non-Carpenter releases.
I'm hoping I can get in on their next subscription. My fear is the eBayers will start targeting Death Waltz like they do Mondo.

As for RSD, if anyone has a copy of Mad Season, Porno For Pyros, or The Cure and is interested in Elephant shoot me a PM and we can hopefully work out a trade. I'd also be willing to do cash for any of them. Worst case scenario, I'll wait till the eBay frenzy dies down and the prices come down to planet earth.

Death Waltz sends their stuff to stores at least, does Mondo even do that? There were multiple new copies of They Live at Amoeba.

Other than They Live, most of their releases readily available on sites such as Elusive Disc are on Black vinyl. The ones they sell on their site are the colored variants.

Managed to get the glow in the dark Poltergeist set...yeah the audio is kind of terrible on it. A lot of background noise...glad I have the black vinyl release of it.

I wonder why the terrible sound? None of my other colored vinyl sound different at all...

Mondo gets more and more distribution with each release it seems. Drive should be the biggest yet.

Halloween II was the colored variant.

Well, wait, I don't know. The one I have is black with a pink pulsating ring. I'm seeing a photo on their site of one that's half black, half yellow.

The one I have is mostly black with an orange color towards the outside of the LP. Haven't heard of the pink version.

My bad, it is orange. I misremembered. I think that the one with the ring looks cooler than the half colored one.

Porno for Pyros avail at Looney Tunes with their leftover stock... (it looks like it's only the Blue UK RSD inventory left, not the US RSD tie-dye color)

http://ltcds.com/

Not sure if they use realtime inventory or not but they are a reputable place.

you know RSD sounds like an awesome idea. Lets help out the little guy who owns an independent record by getting people into their store but price the little guy customer out of everything. Who thought this up Mitt Romney?

You either want an exclusive release bad enough or you don't. Personally, I'd never wait in line for any record, period. I stumble into a few stores at 10 am and what's there is there.

Plus, the soundtrack in question IS a picture disc, right? The very definition of a collectable.

I haven't listened to it, but M83 did the score and they're electronic trance artists, so we'll see. The friends that did see the film say the score rocked.

In retrospect I think maybe I should have bought the At The Drive In album for $40 that they wanted, so I could sell it for over the $100 that its now going for on the secondary market. I'm just pissed that the liquid filled Blunderbuss vinyl was going for $325 (retailer priced it). Fuck, I understand the mega sets going for almost that much, but for a regular vinyl?

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Got to my local shop at 630am and was 5th in line. Picked Up:

White Stripes
The Cure
Dazed and Confused
Wings single
The Gaslight Anthem SE CD (although i swore it was supposed to be a DVD as well)
The Black Keys
Garbage
Secret Band - Secret Song (I havent even opened it once i heard it was The Dead)
Machester Orchestra/Grouplove/Frightened Rabbit
Biffy Clyro

Pretty sure I am forgetting some.

I put down No Alternative, Biggie and Mad Season since I had to stay on a budget. The only other I would have bought was the Frightened Rabbit full length but they got none in.

That's presuming that the store even puts out the exclusives. Amoeba had a line around the block and were filling orders one at a time (seriously). None of the exclusives were being put out until the line finished (I don't know at what point they stopped new people from joining the line), which was around 2 PM. I was there at 10:30 AM to trade stuff in and didn't feel like waiting around till some indeterminate point in the afternoon for the remaining exclusives to get put out, and then get crushed by the crowd as they surged for it as one.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I went to one of my local record stores for RSD. I got there about 45 minutes to an hour after opening. They still had a lot of stuff, but almost none of what I wanted. I ended picking up the Pink Floyd 'See Emily Run' single, the Garbage record and the Tegan & Sara 'Closer' Remixes.
I really wanted the Coheed & Cambria Demos. :(

After I walked across the street to the other record store I never go to, to see if they happened to have anything else. I walked in, saw a RSD display that had a copy of Opeth's Blackwater Park on it marked $45. I immediately turned around and walked out.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I participated in my first record store day this year, but I only showed up near the end of the day to catch some of the bands playing and to hang out and talk music with people. I did pick up the new album from The Features, which doesn't officially come out until May 14. I believe this was exclusive to Grimey's here in Nashville.
