Re: The VINYL Thread!

Went to five stores in three cities. Was able to pick up:
Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Hillbillies In Hell, Badfinger, Lou Reed, Brett Smiley and CSNY.

missed our on Alice Cooper, Otis Redding, Ronnie Lane and the Magnetics.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

My stores had very limited quantities. Didn't really get to grab all I wanted :(
Grabbed the 7" Halestorm. Got Elvis live for the wife. and for novelty I got the Cheech & Chong
Only 2 copies at one store of The Crow soundtrack and they went to the first 2 people who got in. Grabbed Pink Floyd but man, $36 was steep for me.

Good news is, the Dio release, while cancelled for RSD in the US, will be available on the 26th. I almost had a buddy in the UK pick it up for me. Glad I found the update on the issue before spending too much money.

These RSD releases certainly seem to be getting more and more expensive every year.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Yeah they are! It's the 'niche' thing as far as I'm concerned.
For me, sometimes remastered stuff is just horrible. It's loud. Sounds like my speakers are gonna blow.
I prefer the way it sounded on vinyl than even CD sometimes.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

The two I got sound really good (they better, as they're all-analog from original masters), and even though the vinyl pressings are good, there's a scratch on one of them, but it's the on the bonus disc over a live version of a song, so not a big deal. But even though they are upping their game in quality, things still aren't flawless like they should be at these prices.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Scouring eBay and man. I wonder how many I saw at stores, who were there to just buy and flip.
Seems like the most expensive is The Crow. I'm seeing high prices with several bids. Really bummed I didn't get that one. Was my main want after Dio

slop101 04-14-19 12:34 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

If I knew The Crow was so sought after, I would've bough one, as my store had a couple of them when I went. I had no idea.

Though going by history, ebay prices are highest the week after RSD - they tend to calm down a week or two afterwards. Still expensive, but not as bad as when the hype is the hottest.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Well what's interesting is although the album was an RSD exclusive, there is no number of release listed. I mean how many were released? I'm hearing stores on average only got 2-3 copies

Re: The VINYL Thread!

8000 copies

I just got back in town and hit up the local record store to see what on my list was still available. I managed to get the two Grateful Dead releases and PF - Saucerful of Secrets. I missed out on the Jerry Garcia Band and Allman brothers albums. He still had several copies of The Crow soundtrack. I was briefly tempted to pick one up just to sell on for a profit, but I hate people that do that.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

8000?! Man that's 4x as many as any other releases and not all of those even got sold.

Dude, you're lucky to have them available :(

I was super busy on Saturday, and only had 30 minutes free. Drove by my favorite store around noon, and saw a line of about 50 people just waiting to get in the store, so I just kept right on going.

Went to another store on Sunday, and picked through the remains. Almost all soundtracks remained, but very little else.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

A line of 50 at noon? Sheesh! My store (which had plenty of product), had about 5 people inside the store when I went there at 9am (they had opened at 7, which I wanted to skip).

Paff 04-15-19 02:20 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Right? I figure going at noon I'd avoid the crazy crowds even though it decreases my chance of getting the most wanted titles. Small price to pay. But I'm happy for the guy, 'cause his store always gets left off the list of "Best place in town to buy vinyl" polls in the local press. It's not hipster, there's no in-store performances, it's just records in a clean and organized albeit rather plain store. But always a great selection of new and used at good prices.

DUDE! Thanks. I'll give it a shot. But hoping I can score one and cancel just in-case they don't actually get it.

If this is the right thread, what cart are y'all using?

I restored a Technics SL-1500 I got from E-bay back around '09, and part of the restoration was a new cartridge. Went with the ultra-popular and affordable AT-95e, and it did sound good. I bought another TT with no cart for a friend's birthday, put my AT on it for her, and upgraded to a Shure M97xE for my own setup. That cart has a reputation for dropping a channel, and it turns out to be true. So I have an Ortofon 2M Red on it's way from Amazon.

About 15 years ago, I was an idiot.

I sold my SL-1200, Yamaha CR-800 and Pioneer CT-F9191 all on CL for $275
Was all originally bought new by my Dad. He gave it it to me. I used it for a few years then needed money for a stupid car repair that today I would have no problem fixing myself.

Stay on the lookout and buy them back one by one.. you might have a good time searching through the listings on ebay and other forums.. also check your local tag sales, lots of good stuff there if you get there early.

I think you'll be happy with the AT, I have an AT 449MLB and it works very nice.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Yeah maybe one day.

I do need me a turntable though. Was thinking about the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X
It's inexpensive, good reviews from knowledgeable people. And the store I was at on RSD had them for $109 but I see Amazon has it for $89 on Prime
I do read speed is off a tiny bit, but really not by much for the average user to be an issue.

The one issue I had with my SL-1200 was the counterweight on the tone arm. Hated having to adjust that thing if it got knocked.

I think you mean 440, and that thing is $300!!

I just ordered the Orotofon Red, let me give that a spin for a bit and see how I like it. Not sure I want to keep sinking money into carts, as this will be my third since 2009
