Yes everyone misinterpreted "God hates ****". She was saying it ironically!

She didn't say "God hates ****", like Fred Phelps. She said "you all can go on Twitter and say that Michelle Shocked said God hates ****." There is a huge difference. There's a lot about this story that didn't make sense, and I think a huge part of that not making sense stems from her being a lot crazy -- she always has been -- but her history just didn't back the simple takeaway.

I honestly believe her apology, in that she does not hate gay people. It just doesn't fit with her past. I do think she was, at the same time, trying to show support for those who do hate gay people. Which is twisted, of course, and is indicative of why she was acting so weird.

Being a freaky born again will lose her just as many fans as her supposed rant.

The audio was posted here and I really don't see how she can back peddle from her statements. I don't think she was just misunderstood. She clearly states that those are things she believes in.

Michelle Shocked is NOT a conservative though, she was a huge supporter of the Occupy moviement. But yes, she lost her mind going and playing for a majority lesbian audience in probably the gayest city in the US and telling them that they're going to hell and God hates them... think the way you conservatives treated Dixie Chicks... same thing they did with their audience that Shocked just did with hers.

Totally different. The Dixie Chick's rant bordered on treason, whereas Shocked was simply stating a personal opinion.

eh, I listened to most of it and didn't hear the same things as you. I heard the ramblings of someone struggling with coherency (not to mention struggling with her own soul). The later prepared statements, to me, demonstrate the conflict of viewpoints that were going on in her mind, and the transcript itself demonstrates that this was a person having a very difficult time expressing that conflict.

I'm not an apologist for her, and I'm not saying she didn't deserve all the tour cancellations. But she has a long history of a lot of things, including standing up for the rights of the oppressed (and, it seems to me, a history of mental imbalance), among other things. But one thing she does not have is a long history of expressing hate and intolerance. So I choose to accept her explanation.

You don't go in front of a 90% lesbian audience and tell them that you think they are the cause of the end of the world and that God hates them any more than you don't go in front of an uber-conservative and religious audience and slam the president. Anyways, Hank Jr. and Ted Nugent have said worse about Obama than Dixie Chicks and Springsteen and the other left-rockers have ever said about Bush. Nugent basically threatened Obama's life, Natalie Maines said she was ashamed to be from the same state. The same people who hate Dixie Chicks cheered when Hank called Obama a radical Muslim... that's treasonous. If you should respect the office of the presidency in one case, you should in *all*. Hank and Ted are as bad as the Dixie Chicks and you should accept that instead of thinking its patriotic to bash the president as long as he's not your guy.

And of course this shows everything that is wrong with the right, they assume Shocked must be a conservative if she spews anti-gay crap... despite the fact that Shocked is as radical a liberal as it gets... except for the fact that she's religious and has a few views where her religion dictates her opinion. The conservative movement needs to distance itself from the religious right and why so many conservatives are trying to distance themselves from the likes of Michelle Bachmann and Mike Huckabee who think being a conservative means you're supposed to hate gay people.
