Johnny Marr -- Discussion Thread

This single's really growing on me. He's on tour in the US this spring, and I may check him out.

Re: New Johnny Marr

I guess he is with New Order in Las Vegas. Speculation for an Electronic reunion was thrown out there.

Re: New Johnny Marr

First, I have to say this track is fucking awesome. It feels so 1988. It's like the love child of the Smiths and the Stone Roses. Why did it take 25 years for Johnny Marr to do his own album!? If the rest is anywhere as brilliant as this, I'm going to be in heaven. And yes, here's to another Electronic album. Was just listening to their first album today.

I just got the record from Amazon. Haven't put it on yet. Kinda annoyed with amazons shoddy pack job. They didnt use their excellent vinyl packaging. They just flattened a box and put a little tape on the side. The corner of the record was out.

It's perfectly pleasant British indie pop/rock. Nothing utterly memorable or radio worthy but it's a fun little record.

Sounds like what usually happens when a seasoned sideman tries to take the spotlight.

Aside from a really bad song ("Generate! Generate!"), I think this is a terrific album. It has a very late 80's retro sound and yet sounds very fresh. I've been listening to it constantly and like it so much, I just purchased tickets to see Marr at the 9:30 Club on 4/29.

Hmm, I thought "Generate! Generate!" was one of more interesting and fun tracks, completely surprised by the infectiousness of that one. Ah, opinions. We all win, don't we?

Let me rephrase. Other than the part where he says "generate! generate!", it's not a bad song. I just hate that part. It feels just a bit odd and off.

Daytripper, have you heard either the new Hurts album or the debut Bastille album?

I have a feeling, given our somewhat similar tastes in music, that you'd really enjoy those two. Trust me on this. Check 'em out.

I have not, and thank you friend. I'm off to iTunes now!

BTW, is Marr playing anywhere near your? Touring for this album? I got my tickets for the D.C. show. Very excited. Morrissey last month and Marr in a few, it's the closest I'll ever get to a Smiths reunion.

Edit: OK, are you talking about "Exile" by the Hurts and "Bad Blood" by Bastille? "Exile" is released on 3/11 and "Bad Blood" is only available on Amazon.co.uk as an import, but out of stock.

Yes, to both Bastille and Hurts. They'll be worth the wait. Download both when they arrive. Hurts' first record is available. This new one is miles better...fuller, more contemporary.

Marr is playing, coincidentally enough with New Order in Santa Barbara. I'm not attending but any self respecting music fan will recognize that Bernard and Marr were once in a little band together themselves....hmmm.....

Same here... Picked up a ticket for him in Philly. Saw Morrissey in January.

Grrrrrrr!!! Electronic opened for Depeche Mode during a few of their "Violator" shows on the West Coast. Was furious I never got to see them live!

Yes they certainly did. Or was that Nitzer Ebb? Hmm....

On the same subject, as I know you're a big fan, but I had the opportunity to listen to the new DM album (including iTunes bonus tracks from International territories) a few weeks ago...and was sorely underwhelmed. It's slightly better than SOTU but not by much. The "Dave" written songs are the best ones..surprisingly enough. Or not? Anyway, don't want to burst your bubble but wanted to give you a heads up.

Johnny Marr really still looks like he does on the record album?! He's kept himself up quite well!

Nitzer Ebb opened for them in most of the Northern America cities. But Electronic opened in a few on the West Coast. And that's shame about the new album. Hope we have different expectations

Do you mean Live on Letterman? That 50 minute online concert? Yes, I did. Other than the new songs we've already heard ("Heaven" and "Angel"), they played three new ones. One was pretty good, one was o.k. and one was absolutely awful. Probably the worst thing DM have ever recorded. I was literally like "What the fuck is this!??".

Yeah, both Nitzer and Electronic opened for Depeche at Dodger Stadium when I saw them.

Just got this Marr album. Looking forward to listening to it.

hal9000 - I was at that show. I was young. But I vaguely remember.
