All right, got my ticket for Marr in Boston. I never saw The Smiths, but I saw Morrissey in '97...only 16 years apart. Oh well, it was 20 years between me first seeing Joe Strummer and then Mick Jones play.

I'm so excited to see Marr. And I can't stop playing this album. Definitely will be one of my favorites this year. When is Morrissey going to release another album? He's touring a lot this year, no new music though. He's one of my favorite live performers. But I hated the setlist on the show I saw in D.C. last month. I know they change city to city.

Johnny Marr - LP 2 - "Playland" - Out 10/6/14

Johnny Marr’s upwards trajectory continues unabated with the release of his second solo album ‘Playland’ which is out on October 6th on Warners. Work on ‘Playland’ commenced in London in the Spring as soon as the year of touring in support of ‘The Messenger’ came to a close. It finds Marr continuing the creative connection that was forged on ‘The Messenger’ with collaborator and co-producer Doviak as well as the other musicians who performed on the album and accompanying tour.
As Johnny states: “When The Messenger came out I kept on writing. I liked that the band had a momentum going on tour and a connection with the audience, and I thought that energy would be good to capture on the new record.”
Written around a common theme of “songs that move at the speed of life,” ‘Playland’ captures much of the spirit that made ‘The Messenger’ so memorable with energetic, post-punk songwriting complemented by Johnny Marr’s characteristic guitar style, thought-provoking lyrical ideas and poised vocal phrasing. “It’s important to sound like your environment and on this record that’s London and Manchester,” he adds. “The feeling of the cities and the people make it into the music.”
The title ‘Playland’ is inspired by ‘Homo ludens’, a 1938 book by the highly influential Dutch cultural theorist Johan Huizinga which explores the concept of play as a precursor and principal element of cultural development.
Released on CD, vinyl and digital formats, the ‘Playland’ tracklisting is:
Back In The Box
Easy Money
Dynamo
Candidate
25 Hours
The Trap
Playland
Speak Out Reach Out
Boys Get Straight
This Tension
Little King

Me too. The Messenger was fantastic, and the tour was top-notch as well. I was surprised at how natural he seemed as a frontman.

I have The Messenger (digital) but have not listened to it yet. This one peaks my interest, though.

Good, not great. It does sound like an extenstion of the last one. It was awesome seeing him live in a small environment last year.

Like much of the Messenger, I'm liking this single more each time I listen. Great main guitar hook.

Wow, this release completely flew under my radar. Missing this thread entirely. And just read about it on metacritic. As mentioned in other music threads on DVDTalk, I thought "The Messenger" was great and one of the year's best. So I'm all over this! Nice job, Johnny. Striking while the iron is hot and writing, recording and releasing another album this soon. Just like the good old days (especially in the 80's). When most bands and artists released new albums about once a year. Especially British artists.

I'm a bit dissapointed, but there are some absolutely brilliant songs amongst the filler:

Really enjoying the album, have been listening on Spotify non stop for the last week. Right now I'm most digging The Trap, Little King, and This Tension (even if it's a bit of a Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others rewrite)

I think I enjoyed The Messenger more. But I've only given this 2 spins so far.

I'm liking it better than The Messenger. But my vinyl copy of that one didn't sound so great to me. This one is a huge improvement in that area. I've enjoyed every song so far. $19 on blue vinyl at my local shop.

I really liked the Messenger a lot, but Playland is a far better album, IMHO. I was surprised that he was putting out another album so soon, but with songs this great, it's no wonder. There's some really good energy going on in this album!

Call The Comet
The New Album 15th June

Recorded with his band in Manchester at Marr’s Crazy Face studios, ‘Call The Comet’ is the third solo record from the Smiths guitarist and follows 2013’s critically acclaimed The Messenger and 2014’s Playland; both of which made the UK top 10. “Call The Comet is set in the not-too-distant future” says Marr, “and is mostly concerned with the idea of an alternative society. It’s my own magic realism.” Songs include Actor Attractor, Walk Into The Sea, Bug, and recent live favourite Spiral Cities. “The characters in the songs are searching for a new idealism, although there are some personal songs in there too. It’s something that people like me can relate to.” Says Marr.
1. Rise
2. The Tracers
3. Hey Angel
4. Hi Hello
5. New Dominions
6. Day In Day Out
7. Walk Into The Sea
8. Bug
9. Actor Attractor
10. Spiral Cities
11. My Eternal
12. A Different Gun
