Sweet Baby James 03-04-08 01:55 PM

Great news! I've been an Aimee fan all the way back to her 'Til Tuesday days.:)

You got into her because of the Magnolia soundtrack, but don't like Bachelor #2? Half the songs she did on Magnolia wound up on Bachelor. (Not "Wise Up" or "Save Me", though, I guess.)

Looking forward to the new record. Feels like it's been forever since Forgotten Arm.

Yeah...I know. I like all the B#2 songs that were in Magnolia, but the other ones are not that great IMO. I do like Red Vines however.

How the @#%&! did I miss this news? I guess I've been slacking on the Aimee front lately. Loved that song and thought the video was at least interesting, if a little annoying (in her entire carreer she's only made two great videos -- Voices Carry and Save Me). I'm very excited for this album; the new U2 album with Rick Rubin just dropped to #2 on my most-wanted list.

I hope she tours to support this. She hasn't played Vegas since 2003, it's time to come back.

QuagmireTheMan 03-13-08 01:27 PM

Anyone have a recent picture of Aimee? Last time I saw her she was looking pretty bad..

I'm getting even more excited about the new CD. Also looking forward to the packaging of the limited edition release - which was great for her last 2 releases (TFA winning a Grammy for "Recording Package"). Kinda brings me back to my youth when it was fun to examine every detail of the album artwork.

Gary Taxali did the artwork for @#%&! Smilers. You can check out his portfolio on his website:

<---------- Guy who will spend extra $$$$$ for that special edition

Thanks for the info Coral.
I'm gonna have to splurge and go for the expensive edition damnit.
Cannot wait to own this CD.

Gizmo 03-23-08 04:13 PM

Ill go for the LE. I wonder if it will be available in stores or only at her web site?

The limited editions for her last two CDs were available at stores on the release date, so I'm guessing it'll be the same in this case. The funny thing is I've never seen the non-LE version for her last two CDs until a year after their release - so I assumed those were the only versions available.

June feels like a long time away.

What were her last two LE's? My Forgotten Arm is in a cardboard style case...is that it?

Mine has a cool booklet with the lyrics and illustrations.

It's cardboard style, but with a booklet inside (as LiquidSky mentioned) with really nice artwork... the same for both LIS and TFA. LIS Limted Edition came with an 2nd disc with 3 tracks (not to be confused with the Special Edition with those tracks and Live tracks on the 2nd disc). I think at first the LIS LE was the exact same as the non-LE except for the 2nd disc. Then I saw it in a jewel case many months later. Same thing happened for TFA LE except it didn't have a 2nd disc.

Wow, that was confusing. I won't even go into the SACD release of LIS. ;)

 My mind is spinning after reading all that. I need my coffee this morning. :)

There was a LIS SACD released? Ugh. I need it.

Edit: Both Lost in Space and Bachelor #2 were released on SACD...ugh. Since my PS3 plays SACD I now need to purchase both of these. Crap.

Rest assured, both are still pretty easy to find and (thankfully) affordable. :)

Both seem to be about $30 or so on eBay and Amazon sellers...any physical stores still sell these?

Just an FYI: Unless I'm mistaken, neither of these are surround sound SACD discs. Just a high resolution stereo version.

I have both, and they sound great, but I don't know if I'd pay $30 for them. For me, the whole SACD and DVD-Audio thing is all about the surround sound versions.

GenPion 03-27-08 11:27 AM

I want this album. But I still haven't gotten around to getting Bachelor No. 2. I have Lost in Space and The Forgotten Arm, both of which are excellent albums. Aimee Mann is an exceptional musician.

Go and get Bachelor No. 2 and the Magnolia soundtrack.

NOW!

Gizmo 03-29-08 11:45 PM

Well, I threw caution to the wind and ordered but Lost in Space and B#2 SACD's on Amazon for $60 shipped. My PS3 is an SACD player so I am looking forward to hearing them, even if they are minute differences.

I'd hate to derail this thread, but I'm not a big music fan. I typically listen to Aimee Mann, Fionna Apple, Sheryl Crow and some older stuff like Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens. Any other musicians I should listen to? I'd like to fill my iPhone with a bit more music then what I already have, I'm just not a big music fan.

Have you heard any Lucinda Williams? If not, I highly recommend her last 3 studio CDs: West, World Without Tears, Essence.

Back on topic... an article about the meanings of the songs on Smilers:

(ignore any praise since it's probably biased)

I think the obvious choice based on what you listed above would be Cat Power. Seems right up your alley, check out her album "free" to start.

You might like the wonderful new CD by Zoery Deschanel & M. Ward called She & Him: Volume 1. Really great stuff.

Also give Josh Ritter a try, his last album is fantastic.
