amiee mann, where to start?

Maybe the reason that it didn't come up in a search was that the original thread starter decided that her name was spelled "amiee".

Not a bad song. I once played this about 20 times on a long trip and never got sick of it.

This album came out a few years before the movie Ghost World did. When I first listened to the song Ghost World on the album, I liked it, but didn't get the point or understand the title. After watching the film and listening to the song again, it all became clear. What a cool song. It should have been used in the movie.

BTW: What was the Aimee Mann song that played in Jersey Girl when J Lo died? I didn't recognize it.

Coral 11-18-04 11:52 AM

Decker,

the song is called That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart, and AFAIK it's not included in any CD right now.

Her upcoming CD in March, The Forgotten Arm will apparently have the song.

I've been watching her web site, and love the new songs. I am seeing her on Friday here in San Diego. Can't wait.

Cool! Thanks for the link!

I've heard a couple of these from her "Live at St Annes Warehouse" DVD/CD and really enjoyed them...I'll be getting this on release day. Pretty cool to be able to hear this stuff legally beforehand though...

Anyone else getting the book of lyrics? Sounds like it could be cool - I really enjoyed the artwork and book that went along with the Lost in Space special edition, so I'm tempted to get this one too.

dcswirl 03-17-05 12:09 AM

I saw her open up for Bob Dylan some years ago in Columbus, Ohio and I had no idea who she was when I saw her name. When she came out I was like "OMG, it's the girl from 'Til Tuesday!" Anyway, she was really, really good. I was shocked.

LiquidSky 03-17-05 07:21 AM

Cool news! I saw Aimee last summer....she puts on an excellent show.

Jack Straw 03-18-05 08:59 PM

Already pre-ordered it from Musictoday. Say her last Saturday at the HOB in Anaheim. Lots of material from it was played so I'm anxious to check out the studio versions.

djbrown 03-22-05 10:26 AM

the next 3 songs are streaming.

djbrown 04-07-05 11:49 AM

The entire album is streaming now for a limited time....

Thanks. I already pre-ordered it, but I'll enjoy it here until it arrives.

Rypro 525 04-09-05 05:42 PM

damnit, she's touring and even coming to baltimore in june, only problem, its at rams head which is a 21 and over bar/concert venue.

She has a new thing on itunes with some of her songs and never released tracks with introductions. Any aimee mann fans should go check it out.

Decker 04-09-05 11:21 PM

As any regular to this forum should know by now, I just love her. This album is another winner. Glad I'll finally get the song "That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart", the song that for a moment during "Jersey Girl" did the impossible -- Made me care about Ben Afflick and Jennifer Lopez.

BTW : Damn, no Vegas dates listed. Hopefully she'll add one. Saw her and met her two years ago at the Paris. Great show.

Jack Straw 04-10-05 12:32 PM

Decker - You and I were both at that Paris show. My first time seeing her too. That venue was truly amazing seeing her perform next to the "Eiffel Tower" and the swimming pool. Duncan Sheik opening was great too given he did a few Oasis covers.

Very cool that we were at the same show (though it wasn't my first time seeing her -- I'd seen her at a small venue in Anaheim in '94 supporting "I'm With Stupid")

The Paris pool was a wonderful venue (about a thousand times better than the pool at Mandalay Bay) and I loved being up so close. I took a couple of pictures with my camera phone. Quality isn't great, but here's one.

New Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm - Eh

Not that great. I think Bachelor #2 and the Magnolia soundtrack set such a high bar the last couple CD's are pretty weak. Aside from a couple catchy numbers, it seems like (to quote the single off the album) she's Going through the Motions.

LiquidSky 05-04-05 03:04 PM

I purchased Aimee's new CD last night and love it. I just found out she will be playing in Nashville this June. :)

JAA 05-05-05 07:46 AM

I will have to disagree - although I have only given it one listen. You are so right about Bachelor and Magnolia, however. Those may never be touched again. That said, I already much prefer TFA to say, Lost In Space (which I believe is a very good album). Isn't this her first true concept album as well? Its status in her catalogue may actually rise over time and with further consideration. Count me in as an early fan of Aimee's new release.

cheapskate 05-05-05 12:59 PM

I've been listening to it for the last couple of days now - and I'm still feeling pretty mixed about it.

Although it's stated to be a "concept album", I can't see exactly why it would be defined as one. The "story" is far too vague to feel like much of a progression, and there aren't a lot of similar elements or themes from one song to another. (unless you count all the instruments sounding the same, long song titles and saying "baby" a lot as similar elements)

The album is definitely strongest in the middle section, with my current favorites being "She Really Wants You", "Video" and "Little Bombs".

The worst? "Goodbye Caroline" and "Clean up for Christmas" are among the weakest tracks I've ever heard from her - and although the entire album sounds live, I actually prefer the truly live versions of "Going through the Motions" and "King of the Jailhouse" from the Live at St. Annes Warehouse to the ones on the album. KOTJ sounds a lot punchier on the Live CD.

Funny my wife and I were driving home listening to it tonight and she said "My God she says Baby more than any singer I've ever heard". Agree with you about the concept album thing. I still adore her voice.
