That ultra-colorful, spray-paint-festooned image you see above is the cover art for Coldplay's new single, "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall". The band just announced the track on their website this morning; it'll be streamed on their site and digitally released this Friday, June 3 (those in the UK will be able to buy it the next day). According to a statement from drummer Will Champion, the band plans to perform the song at their festival appearances this summer, including this weekend's Rock Im Park festival in Nuremberg, Germany.

If you head over to the band's site now, you can read the lyrics to the song, which include the following couplet: "Don't want to see another generation drop/ I'd rather be a comma than a full stop." Real talk: If there's one band that shouldn't be releasing lyrics before people hear the actual music, it's probably Coldplay.

I just heard 'Clocks' on the radio today, and started wondering about when they would be releasing new stuff...great news.

Here's hoping the new release is more along the lines of their first two albums. I know plenty of people here like X&Y and Viva but to me those albums are bloated, uneven messes.

(I have to admit that "Talk" and the second half of "Death and All His Friends" are among their best work).

Interesting that you lumped in the last two albums as sound companions. IMO, "X&Y" was their worst album, but "Viva" and "A Rush" are easily their two best albums. They've come such a long way since I first heard "Yellow" and thought it was DMB (holds nose). People still piss on this band, but they've put out so many great songs and with Brian Eno working with them again it's hard for me not to scrunch my nose at the scoffers.

I actually think they have gotten continually better...Viva is a great album!

Viva was a great album and probably better than No Line on the Horizon by U2 which came out in 2009.

I hope they stay on the same musical path and don't go overboard with the slow ballads.

It's okay. I can hear influences from Strawberry Swing and Death and All His Friends. I know some aren't keen on it, but I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of X&Y and was hoping to hear some more songs akin to those.

Yeah, you can definitely hear that they're continuing the sound they've cultivated on Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, which is fine by me since I love the album. Song sounds pretty good and I imagine it will sound even better with each listen. Looking forward to the album; hope Christmas Lights is on it as well.

While X&Y has some great songs, I'd probably say it's their weakest album. Tough call between A Rush Of Blood To The Head and Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends though, since they're both such different albums. But for my money, the first half of Death And All His Friends (the song) is probably the best thing they've done; I wish The Escapist (which is also good) was its own separate track though, because I don't always want to listen to them together.

The single is free today only(June 4) on volumevote.com. Yes, it's a legit site, been around for a few years, you don't have to sign up for anything either. Most of the time they seem to have obscure stuff, but every once in a while, they have more mainstream material.
