Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
I guess I don't understand audio formats.
On the DSOTM specs, it says the DVD contains:
I thought that was only possible on SACD or DVDA or this mythical BD-Audio format I've never experienced?
On the DSOTM specs, it says the DVD contains:
- The Dark Side Of The Moon, James Guthrie 2003 5.1 Surround Mix (previously released only on SACD) in high resolution audio at 640 kbps

If there is ANY band whose music needs to be experienced in a whole-album format, it's Pink Floyd.

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
well there is THIS mega-box release:

"Since 1967 Pink Floyd have produced one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of recorded music. All 14 original Studio albums have now been painstakingly digitally remastered by James Guthrie (co-producer of The Wall), and are reissued with newly crafted packaging and booklets created by the band's long-time artwork collaborator Storm Thorgerson.
`Discovery' albums are designed as an introduction to the artist, with all booklets including full album lyrics. All 14 newly remastered Discovery studio albums are now available as a boxset collection that also includes an exclusive 60-page artwork booklet designed by Storm Thorgerson."

I would. Pink Floyd's final album was The Wall as far as I'm concerned.
I saw them sans Roger Waters. Show was great but those albums are not Pink Floyd.

personally I love 'The Final Cut' and in the latest Uncut special 'Pink Floyd' issue, they point out that even though many consider it flawed it's essentially an underrated album.

I loved it when it came out but it hasn't aged well. Still some of the songs are very good and the sound quality was revolutionary at the time of the birth of CDs.

As much as I like The Division Bell and A Momentary Lapse of Reason, they're not true Floyd albums. There's glimmers here and there, but it's not a complete package.
And yeah, I still love The Final Cut; the highs of that album are right there with the best of their work and I think Gilmour's solos are right there as well.

You can get the Discovery version of Animals, which is just the remastered album. The Experience/Immersion/Whatever version of Animals hasn't been announced yet.

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
DISC 3 – DVD 1, ALL AUDIO:
- The Dark Side Of The Moon, James Guthrie 2003 5.1 Surround Mix (previously released only on SACD) in standard resolution audio at 448 kbps
- The Dark Side Of The Moon, James Guthrie 2003 5.1 Surround Mix (previously released only on SACD) in high resolution audio at 640 kbps
DISC 5 – BLURAY, AUDIO+AUDIO VISUAL
-AUDIO: The Dark Side Of The Moon, James Guthrie 2003 5.1 Surround Mix (previously released only on SACD) in high resolution audio at 96 kHz/24-bit
what the hell?!
WHY put 448 and 640kbps? Why not just 640kbps? Wouldnt most people choose the higher bitrate?
Also, can't a DVD contain a 96 kHz/24 audio track (which is the version on the BR)?
In that case, why not just just have the highest quality version (96 kHz/24-bit or 640 kbps) and leave the other 2 out?
Whats the difference between the 2 anyway?

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
You think Best Buy will have a nice display of all this stuff when released?
I was leaning towards getting the the Discovery box set, (Im a sucker for big sets) BUT, I wouldnt really listen to anything before Meddle and will not touch the last two. So it would be a waste to get the set.

Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is a classic. After that it is hit or miss really until Meddle. I will probably just hang on to my Piper 3 disc set and the original discs instead of buying these.

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
This was essentially my question earlier. I believe you would need the DVD-A specification and that DVD Video format is not capable. I don't know what what the point of DVD3 is...

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
My (vague) understanding is that the 448kbps = Dolby 5.1 (a standard supported by every DVD Player).
640kbps, I'm assuming, is a 5.1 DTS track. A nice addition for those who can use it at home.
edit: I'm wrong. 640kbps is the max for Dolby Digital. So, I have no idea why they have both, unless they are including a low-bitrate DD track and a DTS track (which still isn't at its highest bitrate of 1.5mbps...)
96kHZ/24-bit is the cream of the crop (in this case). A 5.1 mix at these specs cannot officially be sent over optical or coax (uncompressed), so it's not part of the DVD standard. a 2.0 mix can appear on DVD, I believe, but a 5.1 mix has to be on a Blu-ray, which can send that high bandwidth mix over HDMI.
The best consumer audio format available (that could actually be released on Blu-ray) would be 192kHZ/24-bit, but that's pretty rare. I've seen it on the Akira Blu-ray, but nowhere else (maybe a Nine Inch Nails disc... I can't remember if that one was 96 or 192.)

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
I bet the 640kbps is Dolby Digital at its maximum bitrate. The Pulse DVD had it.
The reason they need both is because some hardware isn't compatible with 640kbps tracks, as 448kbps is the highest that's officially supported in players. Pulse also had both.

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
^ you are correct. I double-checked earlier this evening.
If I could just buy the DSOTM Blu-ray, without all the extra discs, then I'd be all over that. As it stands, I'll likely pass on all of these re-releases. Word is that the albums will all be re- appearing on MOG after the physical release, so I imagine they'll all make it to Spotify eventually.

Re: Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued, with unreleased tracks!
Am I understanding correctly that The Wall, DSOTM, and Wish You Were Here are the only albums getting both Immersion and Experience releases, while the rest of the catalog will only be available as Discovery ("bare-bones") editions? And Dark Side will still be the only one with high resolution audio available (but only in the Immersion set)?

The hi-res SACD of Dark Side of the Moon is still being sold.

Otherwise, I think you are correct.
