It would be nice if they released stuff throughout the year and put out more copies, but overall it's a pretty decent event. At the store I went to (was out of town, but hit The Last Record Store in Santa Rosa, CA), they had a good crowd and some nice sales and it seemed like most people were having a good time talking about music and records. All in all, I think it is a positive event, which like most anything else, could be made better.

That's great, and all, but I just don't think holding a scavenger hunt for limited edition My Chemical Romance picture discs is a great way to get people to start shopping in independent stores.

Probably not, but for the most part I think the LE releases are more bonuses to the fans that already buy records and the die hards that will be lining up, after those are gone it seems better to suit the purpose. Letter people pre-order the limited edition stuff would seem to help the scavenger hunt part.

Honestly the whole limited quantity idea is kinda lame if you ask me. I mean I get that it makes a release feel more special maybe but it sucks if your that fan that really wanted to get something and you either can't because the store didn't get any/sold out or you end up paying someone a lot more than it's worth on eBay. I think that the stores that choose to participate should all be given a fair amount of items to sell and whatever they don't could always go back and the Record Store Day people could just sell the remaining stock through their own site or something.

I went to the local event store and just missed Graham Parker performing live in store. I wish I would have investigated this particular store's event before I got there. What a bummer.

I bought the white vinyl Television Live at the Old Waldorf album, the Mumford and Sons 10", and a bunch of CDs. Sadly, their SACD and DVDA section has dwindled to under two dozen and has been relegated to the back corner.

I finally got those Dukes of Stratosphear re-releases discussed in the XTC thread. Good day. Except for missing Graham Parker.

Nowadays, what constitutes Independent Record Stores? The store I visited is the same I regularly visit and it's got a few local locations; same deal with another store up the street from the previously mentioned.

I do think the limited quantities need to be boosted and with this being the 5th year, I would think that it will increase next year. Curious to know what others who have visited over the years have noticed any change in quantity, compared to the increase in attendance?

Trying to get a copy of Hormoaning but the prices on eBay are absolutely ridiculous on it. Some of the others aren't too bad (though I'm sure more than they sold for). Thinking about snagging the Springsteen single for about $20.

Re: Record Store Day April 16, 2011 - Discussion thread

Went to 6 stores in 2 states and got what I was looking for. Very few of the RSD releases interested me at all, I was more interested in picking up other things I had been looking at. Took advantage of the sales at Newbury Comics and traded some stuff in at Turn It Up! (local to me). Picked up:
RSD items:
James Blake LP (no download code which is disappointing and I paid more than I wanted to for something that is almost a blind buy, but oh well, I should like it.)
Xiu Xiu Deerhoof split 7"
Non-RSD:
National - Boxer LP
Penny and the Quarters - You and Me/You are Giving me Some Other Love 45
Twin Peaks - Season 2 soundtrack CD
Black Star self titled CD
Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway CD
Only thing I wanted to pick up was Kanye West's Graduation, which is actually why I was trading stuff in at Turn It Up! because I knew they had some copies but it turned out that they where some odd South American release which I never noticed that last times I looked at it so I passed. No where else had it for a price I wanted to pay so picked it up from Amazon marketplace when I got home. Had a good day overall, rode bikes to a sugar shack for breakfast so got to the stores late enough too miss the rush but still have a good selection of stuff. Didn't see any of the Foo Fighters or Nirvana though, or the Wild Flags 7" that a friend was looking for. Saw a lot of the other exclusives though, just had little to no interest in them.

I wasn't able to make it out today, can anybody confirm if the Daft Punk: Tron record was cancelled or not?

It was available; apparently it was only canceled in Canada.

I notice that like most things that used to be fun, this is quickly being ruined by the horrid e-bay flippers. I walked in & saw a line snaking through the store with people who had stacks and stacks of the same item. This used to be a fun thing where you could hang out in a real record store & browse through cool things. Now it's just another frustrating hassle I can do without.

There really should be a limit of 2* per item to prevent that from happening. It would help keep with the spirit of the day too. My local stores wouldn't put anything on hold for any one, is that wide spread? I thought that was a good idea as well.

*I feel it is reasonable to get one for yourself and one as a gift or for a friend who wasn't able to make it out. Others may disagree though.

The place I went to, they had a one per person limit until everyone that was in line had a chance to snag something, then you could snag whatever you wanted.

That seemed to work out farily well, it helped that the crowd was pretty cool, people flipping through the records shouting what they found and passing it out to who was interested.

Depending on what time you were there I may have checked you out (I work there, I wasn't cruising). We didn't get the Nirvana release at all and we only had about 4 or 5 of the Television LPs and they went within the first twenty minutes.

I got to the OKC Guestroom at about 10:30 -we open at 11- and there were about 60 people lined up and we did the same 5 people in every 3 minutes deal to avoid any record related injuries. We had a solid checkout-line for about 3 hours. I was at the store for eleven hours total and we were busy all but one of those hours.

I was really disappointed my store didn't get the Big Star LP but apparently that one was really hard to get. I also would have liked to have gotten that "Brown Sugar" 7" but we didn't get any of those either.

I did get the two main things I wanted though:
The Beach Boys double-10"
The International Submarine Band - Safe at Home mono reissue with bonus 7"

In my "holds" I put the Fucked Up RSD release and the Purling Hiss split 12". Those I'll get at a later date.

It was a really fun day.

The problem with that is that most of our orders were capped (meaning we didn't even get all we ordered).

My manager ordered just about everything that was available and there was some stuff that just never showed up. On many of the releases my manager would order 5-10 and only get 2 or 3.

It is frustrating but with a limit on items more people at least have a chance of getting something they want. With no limts the first A-hole* in could get most of everything.

*By A-hole, I mean the first guy that's in to grab everything limited to flip on E-Bay for astronomical prices.

Re: Record Store Day April 16, 2011 - Discussion thread

Orders being capped is another reason I think there should definitely be limits on how many people can grab. I'm acquainted with some of the people working at my local shops and we were talking about how they didn't get any where close to what they ordered, only a few of some releases, none of others. When you have only 2000 copies of something pressed, someone is going to miss out, especially the smaller shops.
If everything was limited to 1 per customer I would have no problem with that. If it were limited to 2 per customer, that would be ok too. (Unless you are buying 2 of everything you are getting or just picking up every release available, that seem suspicious.) Anything over that doesn't seem fair as it would most likely be meant for ebay or something, and that I do have a problem with.

I got there at about 2:30 or so to the OKC location... I waited in Norman for them to open from about 9:30 or so on.

I really appreciate the way you guys do it. The one item per person with five in at a time is way better than the mad rush to the door. I did it last year and was there pretty early. It was hard to look at everything because people were just grabbing in front of you and it was hard to walk through the crowd to get away from the rack.

When I was there the electricity and the generator were both out, so it looked really hectic.

It should be one per customer. But the eBay flippers would find a way around it.

Just wondering, what were the regular-set prices of these special releases, so people know, if they want to look on ebay? I wasn't able to go and wanted to get some stuff, but I'm not willing to pay the extra fees those flea-bayers want.

I paid $35 for the Television album and $11 for the Mumford and Sons. But this shop is a bit overpriced normally so I'm not sure what the "real" price was for others.

Re: Record Store Day April 16, 2011 - Discussion thread

I bought 5 records, none of which were RSD exclusives.

A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms (re-release)
Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante
Broken Bells - Meyrin Fields (did NOT have MP3 code, although the sticker said it did.)
Autechre - Move of Ten (part 1)
Autechre - Move of Ten (part 2)

My wife bought:
Rufus Wainwright - his first self-titled album, which is both of our favourite.

Someone grabbed the Circa Survive exclusive right in front of me... I didn't even see it there. Otherwise, I'd have picked it up. Oh well.

Re: Record Store Day April 16, 2011 - Discussion thread

I predict that RSD will last no more than another two years before being just another day that gets ignored. My co-worker went to several stores and couldn't get any of the exclusives and was actually angry at how overcrowded and "mainstream" it had become. (Stupid hipsters )

Being from the original vinyl era, and having spent most of my teen years practically living in record stores, I too don't understand how these super-limited releases that serve to satisfy less than 1% of the customers is doing the business any favors. I'd be pissed too by having to drive from town to town and getting disappointed at each stop. And any of the regular stuff could be purchased the day before or after without having to stand in the checkout line for an hour or more.

I'm not saying it should go away, I just think that next year fewer people will be inclined to even try. And the year after even fewer. And when hipsterism dies, the next generation will want nothing to do with vinyl, lest they be considered hipsters.

Yeah, all these exclusives have turned this into the opposite of what this day is supposed to be about. Instead of reminding people it's fun to visit record stores, it's turned into a Black Friday event for the e-bay profiteers. I think they need to focus more on in-store performances & stuff that can't be re-sold.

All this year did is make me realize how incredibly cool it is to be able to buy any music I want without leaving my house & having to put up with this shit.

Re: Record Store Day April 16, 2011 - Discussion thread

The thing of it is that these pressings seem to be third-party so you have to consider that this isn't some arm of a major music label.

I really believe that as this becomes an established day, you will see larger quantities; in fact, I bet next year you will not have issues with unfulfilled orders. As was mused earlier, cut the exclusivity of it and the profit will decrease for these flippers and you won't have to worry about them.

And vinyl isn't going out of style, so long as the stylus and turntables are being made, they will always be there.
