funny how amazon can just blow everyone to the market with this and there hasn't been much of a whiff of them doing this.

Updated my Amazon MP3 app and now it streams those two albums I bought this morning. Sound is good. As a storage solution it's less than ideal, but as a way to access Amazon MP3 albums you purchase from here on out, it's a cool little feature.

Mine won't update. Any suggestions? It starts and then just sits there forever.
Never mind. Got it.

That is what I do as well (subsonic is a great tool). I think as time goes on more and more people will have their own "personal clouds" (media streaming, storage, etc), as it is pretty easy to setup and manage. I think things like this in particular are cashing in before that happens.
Offsite storage is still a good thing, but personally, I prefer to my own "personal cloud" for media streaming.,

But let's face it, this is designed for non-techies. Teenage girls, old people, people who buy Lady Gaga and the latest American Idol flash-in-the-pan albums aren't going to be setting up their own stream-from-home system. And for them, 5GB is probably enough, since they tend to listen to the same two or three albums over and over until the next month's flavor comes along.

Nice. So yeah, I can see it being useful for that, and also for people who are bandwidth capped, but overall, if I were going to worry about streaming my collection, I'd do it in the way I described above.
I'm still amazed they think people will pay $1 per GB per year.

Thanks to those who posted about Subsonic. I'm not really in-the-loop about this type of technology, so but I just installed it and put the App on my Droid Incredible and it works like a charm. Took about 10 minutes total, and now I have my entire music library at my disposal.
Why would anyone use the Amazon Cloud Player when something like Subsonic exists?

Their S3 service is $0.14 /month (or $1.68/year) for 1GB of storage (not including transfer costs), and plenty of people pay that.
http://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/
It's also fairly competitively priced when compared with services like MP3Tunes and mSpot:

Of course, both S3 and MP3Tunes scale their prices as more storage is used (although S3 only starts scaling at over 1TB).

Subsonic is nice, no phone streaming after a month without 10 dollar payment though. Might be worth it

Subsonic is totally worth the $10. You even got your own custom URL. I paid another $5 for the iSub iPhone app as well, and it's still a bargain.

Yeah, after I saw what it was capable of online, I did the donation so I can use it on my phone. My iPod can't hold all of my music, so this is a great alternative. And it's ridiculously easy to use.

I see what you mean. I started it and just got a console that was to start the service, had to do the web interface to set it up. I can imagine some computer newbies heads exploding at that point lol

Re: Hey, this is new! Amazon Cloud Player
It didn't even occur to me that I'd run into problems accessing the server from my phone after a while, since the local IP addresses change semi-regularly. Looks like I'll need to set a static IP address for my computer. Haven't done that in a while and since I'm moving soon (and won't be using the same internet provider) I might hold off on the process.
EDIT: Found a great guide on how to set a static IP address and set up port forwarding - http://monroeworld.com/android/subsonic/ - for Subsonic and Android. I'll probably get to it over the summer after I'm at my new place.

Got my 20 gigs
I may use this to store my photos and my favorite music and then just use subsonic for my whole music collection.

I really wish they would import your previously purchased music from Amazon. I've purchased a lot of albums over the last couple years from Amazon, and it would be nice to have that not count against my storage.

MP3's that you buy from Amazon aren't supposed to go against your quota...BUT it's not grandfathered in. So, if I upload the many many MP3s I've bought from them over the years it doesn't count. Lame.

In comparison, Amazon doesn't have to right to apply this method to any past purchases that were under the old licensing agreement. This means the user has to upload the music to the storage, and Amazon has to store the music as separate "user files," thus taking up space they have to pull out of the user's quota.

Btw, it looks like Amazon didn't even get the OK from the record companies to do what they are doing:

Yeah, I tried it, but couldn't get it to work. Sounds like I have to do some manual port forwarding on my router or something. Blah. Can't imagine any noob trying to get that working.

Are you sure about that? My phone can no longer connect to my server and everything I've read seems to suggest you have to manually assign your computer a static IP address and set up port forwarding.
