I'll take new releases by bands like Van Halen over some of the new crap any day of the week.

Eddie played bass on many "classic" VH tracks anyhow, so as an album it can conceivably have that classic VH "sound".
Whether or not it'll be any good, that's another story. I remain cautiously optimistic.

Re: Van Halen New Album
Haven't heard anything in several months on the status of this album, so figured I'd pass along a small update from Slash (of all people) from a couple weeks ago:
http://www.hennemusic.com/2011/05/va...ays-slash.html
It's a noteworthy update for the skeptics (I was one of them) since it appears this thing may actually come to fruition. Rumors are saying that some new material may become available by August -- just in time for the Soundwave Revolution festival in Australia in September (where Van Halen will be performing).

“I’m a huge Van Halen fan,” says Slash. “They’re finishing [up their new album right now], actually. I don’t wanna speak on their behalf, but one of the guys that works for us works for Van Halen in the studio and he told me that they’re in the mixing stages.”

Well, at least Slash had the dignity not to say, "and from what I've heard of it, it's gonna be better than Fair Warning" or some such nonsense.
Looking forward to the tour. I can sit through one new song.

Be interesting to see what the subject matter of the songs is going to be. Van Halen with DLR was a band that sang about two things: getting laid and trying to get laid.

Re: Van Halen New Album
I am very curious to hear it. I liked a smattering of Van Hagar songs, mainly from 5150, but to me VH was never the same after Diamond Dave left.
The only thing I fear is that after 27 years since the last album with him (and 15 since the two GH tracks) is that our expectations are going to be so high that they could release the second coming of Van Halen and it still won't be good enough.

I think they just wrote songs about getting laid. I can't think offhand of any songs about TRYING to get laid. There is no try. Only do.

Musically, I think it's obvious that Ed needs someone around in the band to push him and also keep him in check(like Sammy or Dave). The one album that Ed had total control over was a disaster, IMO. I hope this one doesn't fall into that category.

Re: Van Halen New Album
Van Halen to leave WB and sign with Columbia Records? Also, rumor has it the album should be out in early 2012.

After 35 years at Warner Bros., the band has reportedly left for Sony. An insider tells THR that Columbia A&R executive Stephen Ferrera has been tasked with overseeing a new Van Halen album, its first with David Lee Roth since "1984."
The rumor mill is abuzz with talk of a new Van Halen album -- their first with original singer David Lee Roth since he left the band in 1985, the band's first since 1998's Van Halen III and the first to be released on a label other than Warner Bros. Records, where they spent the better part of 35 years.
Several reports cite that Sony-owned Columbia Records will be Van Halen's new label home, with new music due out in 2012. Indeed, a source tells The Hollywood Reporter, “Nothing has been signed yet, but Columbia has been in the lead for some time,” adding that A&R executive Stephen Ferrera has been tasked with overseeing the album.
Ferrera came to Columbia in June after spending three years at evp of A&R at Island Def Jam, where he worked with such acts as Bon Jovi and Ne-Yo. Before that, he held a senior A&R role at RCA, where he worked with the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Producer-songwriter John Shanks (Michelle Branch, Melissa Etheridge) tweeted early this year that he was in the studio with the band and THR hears Ross Hogarth (Sick Puppies, John Mellencamp) recently finished mixing the album.
Van Halen's current lineup includes Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, his son and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen.
A Columbia Records rep could not be reached for comment.

I think the song (and video) itself is shit, but I'm impressed that they sound as good as they do, especially DLR's voice. Now, live, is likely another situation.
PS: why is Michael Anthony not on board this time?

I've never considered Van Halen an 80's band to begin with. Since they started out in the 70's, if anything, I'd call them a 70's band.

I like the guitar work on that song. On the whole, it's OK for an album track, but if they chose that for the single because it's the best thing on the album, then my expectations will be lowered quite a bit.

Re: Van Halen New Album
Looks like the rumor someone mentioned in the other thread is correct. This single seems to be a reworking of "Down In Flames".

Re: Van Halen New Album
I've given the new track a couple listens. Nothing that'll knock anyone's socks off, but not bad. Will probably grow on me after a few more listens.
