Re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

I attended the memorial service yesterday, and it was really an amazing event. Sadly, some of the people we would have liked to hear from did not attend (they were at the private funeral on Saturday), but it was still a great way to pay tribute to Ronnie.

I've got a rather lengthy report on the entire event and several pics on this thread (It's too long to post here)...

http://www.vistarecords.proboards.co...ead=203&page=1
(It's pretty far down on the thread, but you can't miss it.)

Suffice it to say that it was worth the 3 hour wait in line and the sunburn that I got. I'll never forget this event (and neither will anyone else who attended).

Thanks for the photos, and thank you especially for not taking any pictures of those westboro douchebags.

Honestly, I never saw them.

I got there early to make sure that I could get inside the auditorium for the service (good thing, too, otherwise I would have a sunburn that would make me look like I had spent the afternoon in Hell). From what I've heard they got there just before 2:00.

By the time it was over they were gone. I've seen a few pictures, and it looks like their, "Protest," fizzled and could only be called a huge bust.

The ceremony was not affected one bit by the protestors. Thankfully.

Thank you for that. Totally wish I could have been there. And glad to hear there will be memorial shows, I might have to fly out to LA for the first one.

Thanks for posting your report and those links. I'm glad that Ronnie had a nice send off with lots of music and remembrances. I'm listening to some vintage Rainbow now in his memory.

Re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

I saw zero coverage on mainstream media for the event. Don't take this the wrong way, but I ALMOST wish the nuts at the Wesboro church had a little more presence, only to draw more publicity to the event.

Nice report B5Erik. Curious/trivial but RJD was from the Northeast correct? Was his final resting place in L.A.?

Wendy and Ronnie made their home out here in The Valley for many years. So it makes sense.

Re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

Thanks for all the kind words on the reoport - I made it a point to bring in a notepad and a pen because I knew a lot of people wouldn't be able to attend who would have loved to be there.

I'm just lucky I could read my own writing...

Re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

I don't know how many of you watch That Metal Show on VH1 Classic, but I thought I'd give a heads up that they're having a Ronnie James Dio tribute tomorrow (Saturday) night for their season opener. Geezer Butler and Rob Halford are among the guests.

(the show is also expanded to an hour this season )

I like that show, but it doesn't need to be an hour.

You could always just watch the first half-hour.

Personally, I thought the show was too short. Looks like they'll be doing two interview segments instead of one this season.

Two interviews I can handle. But if it's extra b.s. with all 3 knuckleheads then I'd prob bail. I like the guys, but they can grate.

One year ago today

This day needs to be an official holiday for the metal community.
Will watch me a few Dio shows in memory

Dio is dead and it makes me sad.
I already miss him, really really bad.
He was such a great singer
Much better than Winger.

Although he was small, he wasn't very tall.
He was little, not burly, and his hair was very curly.
He was married to Wendy, not a girl named Cindy.
And he kicked ass when he hit the stage
but he never played guitar like Jimmy Page.

Dio was in Sabbath and Rainbow too
But as far as I know, he never sniffed glue.
He was never in Deep Purple, but he knew Blackmore pretty good
Because he played a guitar that was carved out of wood.
Not cheap particle board crap made in China
By an underpaid Asian girl with an Oriental vagina.

Into the beyond Dio travels on a bad ass dragon
Much better a ride than an old station wagon
With a sword by his side, he'll slay all non believers
He'll cut off their dicks, and slash all their beavers.
In the land of tr00 Metal, the king shall never die
This poem is so awesome, it makes me cry.

The End.
I can't believe it's been a whole year since I wrote this awesome tribute poem.

Better than the original, or just a bad ass cover ?

Re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

Yeah, it's really, really hard to believe that he's been gone for a whole year. I really miss him - I would have loved a new DIO album and another Heaven and Hell album. More importantly, though, his family and friends miss him on a personal level, and that's a far greater loss.

I'll never forget that public memorial, though. I'm extremely glad that I went. I've been a huge fan of Ronnie James Dio since 1981, and just being there felt right. A year later I still have vivid memories of that day. I'm sure everyone who was there does.

Re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

You know. I always thought of Dio as eternal. I never thought about not having him around.
I grew up on his music and being 38 now, I look back and realize how many years I looked forward to new albums and tours.

I look at some actors and musicians and realize that someday they will be gone but I never thought about it that way with Dio.
It was like he was going to be around as long as I was.

I remember the first time I saw him, and I remember the last time I saw him. Whats in the middle are some of the best shows I have ever been to.
I even once snuck into a show because there was no way I was missing a Dio concert !

I wish I could have made it to the memorial. Not for the experience, but to say goodbye to my metal hero. He will be missed.

Re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

The guy was the ultimate class act and a true one-of-a-kind. It's sad it took his death for the mainstream to realize how much they overlooked a living legend for many years.
