Re: Post a random song you deeply love, & try someone else's.

There's some great stuff in this thread. Awesome idea!

Here's my contribution: Frank Turner's "Long Live The Queen." I was a big fan of his previous band, Million Dead, but he dropped off my radar after they broke up. Stumbled upon his solo stuff about a year ago and it's fucking great. Dude doesn't know how to write a bad song, in my opinion. Anyway, he wrote this song about a friend of his who died from breast cancer. He released it as a single in his native UK and donated the proceeds to charity. Awesome dude. The video's pretty simple but I like it.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_RbNdwY4ujw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_RbNdwY4ujw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Side note: I finally caught him live last week (only the second time he's been to Seattle) and he killed it. One of the best sets I've seen all year.

Re: Post a random song you deeply love, & try someone else's.

This album has made me so very happy for the past 12 years. Back when WOXY still had a terrestrial FM broadcast, Lincoln's single "Blow" got quite a bit of airplay, and it has been a favorite ever since. I created the YouTube "video" for it myself just now, so it may not be available for another several hours.

I just turned on the play counter in my iTunes, and Dylan was easily on top. Springsteen who I also like, is a distant second.
Since you mention Springsteen, how about one of his best unreleased tunes, the exuberant The River-era "Living on the Edge of the World":

For a second I wondered why it was so familiar. It's track 7 on disc two of Tracks. Admittedly, I haven't listened to that set for a long time (and think it was 100% shitty that they included three new songs in the 18 Tracks compilation (pre-itunes), but there's actually a lot of great gems hidden in that massive set. I'm partial to "Where The Bands Are".

Yeah, that's a good one too. Tracks has a number of gems that make one wonder what Bruce was thinking in excluding them from albums. "Santa Ana", "Rendezvous", "Restless Nights", "Roulette", and several more.
Another fav of mine from the Tracks collection is "I Wanna be with You", from the same pre-River sessions as those we have already posted. Then there's the great "Brothers Under the Bridges ('83)", but I've already posted that here in another thread, so I don't want to keep repeating myself.

The Dylan influence is obvious, but I can listen to him & this song all day. . .

I love the build-up of this song, the progressive layering in of instruments and background vocals in the first minute-and-a-half. The chorus and remainder of the song don't quite live up to the opening, unfortunately, but so be it. Few singers have voices that are as lucid and plaintive as Sean Kelly's.

No worries, indeed one of the classic covers. Just recently discovered them and the rest of their stuff is really solid.

Nice, love to see The Samples get some love, I almost posted "nothing lasts for long" or "could it be another change" a page or so back. They were pretty much the soundtrack to my life in the 90s.

Big Portishead fan here, but I just recently tracked down Beth Gibbons' solo album. This song is simply gorgeous. It has a hushed, haunting, almost otherworldly feel to it.

That's my favorite Dylan song too! I have no idea why it was left off of Oh Mercy. Typically shimmering Lanois production transfixes you from the get go.

Have you heard Grizzly Bear?

Feeding off the above post, another song I've been listening to a lot lately:
