Bob Dylan: Christmas in the Heart - October 13, 2009
Bob Dylan to release Christmas album for charity
NEW YORK – Bob Dylan is releasing a Christmas album, and in the spirit of the holiday season, the legendary performer is donating his royalties to charity.
A statement by Columbia Records says "Christmas in the Heart" will be released Oct. 13. Dylan's U.S. royalties will go to the organization Feeding America. It's estimated that will help feed 1.4 million families during the holidays.
The 68-year-old singer says it's a "tragedy" that people go to bed hungry, and he hopes he can bring "food security" to people in need.
Dylan also plans to donate all his future international royalties to charities overseas.

I've never bought a X-mas album but I'm looking forward to this. I've really enjoyed late period Dylan.

I can't wait for Dylan's version of "The Little Drummer Boy."
Christmas staples "I'll Be Home For Christmas," O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Here Comes Santa Claus," and "Must Be Santa" will be on the album. While a final track list is still unconfirmed, "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" will also be included.

I usually don't buy Christmas albums but I can say that I'll pick this up. Love Dylan's work over the last few albums he's done and think his take on some Christmas classics could be interesting.

Man, I'm a Dylan nut but I despise Christmas albums. Still, maybe I'll ignore my inner Grinch for this one...

Dylan just announced a 9-city tour in October. Pretty grueling schedule.

Bob Dylan tour confirms new concert dates for October run
Fri, Sep 4th 2009 1:02 pm EST
By Allison Reitz
Legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has extended his October tour plans to include a new run of shows in the Windy City near the end of the month. The three-night stand envelopes the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL, on October 29, 30 and 31.
The month-end performances are the latest dates on the itinerary for Dylan's previously announced fall trek, which kicks off October 5 at WaMu Theater in Seattle, WA. A handful of other concerts have also been recently confirmed, including shows on October 12 at the Arizona State Fair in Phoenix, AZ, and October 21 at Magness Arena in Denver, CO.
Tickets are already on sale for the early dates of the tour. The more recent additions in Phoenix, Denver and Chicago will go on sale to the general public on September 12. Presales begin on Labor Day, September 7, for the Phoenix market and on September 8 in the other two cities.
The fall tour will feature Dylan backed by His Band. While his trek west is currently limited to nine cities in one month, additional engagements are still to come, according to a statement on the musician's official Web site.
The iconic performer's first autumn/winter 2009 dates coincide with the release of his forthcoming holiday album, "Christmas in the Heart." Due on October 13, the record will feature a mix of traditional Christmas songs, with all artist royalties from U.S. sales going towards the charity Feeding America.
"It's a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone -- 12 million of those children –- often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from," Dylan explained in a statement. "I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season."
Bob Dylan itinerary:
(Dates are subject to change.)
October 5 Seattle, WA WaMu Theater
October 7 Portland, OR Memorial Coliseum
October 8 Eugene, OR McArthur Court Arena
October 10 - 11 Berkeley, CA Greek Theatre
October 13 - 15 Hollywood, CA Hollywood Palladium
October 17 Phoenix, AZ Arizona State Fair
October 18 Las Vegas, NV The Joint
October 21 Denver, CO Magness Arena
October 29 - 31 Chicago, IL Aragon Ballroom

Listen: Bob Dylan Christmas Album Samples
For only a brief time yesterday, Bob Dylan’s upcoming album Christmas in the Heart popped up on Amazon with 30-second streaming audio samples. And let’s just say, even die-hard fans weren’t too happy. “Utterly embarrassing. Please God no, make it stop,” wrote one commenter on Dylan fan-site Expecting Rain. “I like it… I’m problably a masochist,” wrote another.
Well, I’m not going to review an album I’ve only heard 30-second samples from, but if you want to get a taste of Dylan’s take on Christmas classics, listen here or embedded below.
The good news is, however, he’s probably just messing with us.

Wow, if that's real.... well, just wow. I hate Christmas albums anyway (Scrooge, I know) and despite my Dylan love am probably going to pass on this one.

Count me as someone who enjoyed the clips. Ya'll have heard Dylan's last few records, you knew what his voice was going to sound like. They are exactly what I expected and I love them for that.

I listened to his 2009 London concert and I was sure he would have to make some adjustment from the trademark Dylan style, but I didn't expect this. I was planning to get this CD, but not now. Unless the real thing is different...

I'm going to buy it because if this IS the actual final product, it's good for laugh in kitsch sort of way. (And, of course, I'll be helping a charity.)

I have no problems with Dylan's voice. It's the cheesy background singers that make these songs so laughable. Just Dylan with some simple instrumentation would be fine. Dylan with a few distinctive guest vocalists would be nice. But these songs (in their current state) sound like Lawrence Welk Meets Bob Dylan.

this has got to be a put-on. A charitable put-on, but a put-on no less. Dylan maybe even tips his hand a bit when he uses the word "tragedy"
The title, the cover with Tsar Nicholas and his son "dashing through the snow", and the arrangements. It's like an Aristotelian tragedy that's so over-the-top it strays into the comedic. Maybe this is to Dylan what Titus Andronicus was to Shakespeare?

I love this friggin' album so far after about 3 or 4 listens. I appreciate the background singers, I love the nostalgic feel, and Must Be Santa is the most fun I've had listening to a song in a long, long time.
A great addition to my 45+ Dylan albums.

Christmas in the Heart is good.
It is actually different from what I expected after hearing the samples. A lot of the songs are very slow, and many of just Dylan singing himself without anyone else...which I did not anticipate.
I like it a lot and don't fault the guy for putting out his version of christmas tunes after everyone else in the world has put out theirs.
The proceeds go to charity, buy it to have in your collection, then love it when Dylan belts out at the end of Do You Hear What I Hear? or sings in latin.

Must Be Santa is my favorite Christmas song that doesn't seem to be that well known. I am pleased that Dylan included it.
