Danger Mouse (from Knarls Barkley) to release a blank CD-R
http://gizmodo.com/5257670/danger-mo...e-a-blank-cd+r
I think this is great! Stick it to the man!
Danger Mouse, the amazing mashup artist, producer, and half of Gnarls Barkley, is unable to release his newest album due to legal battles with his label, so he's embracing piracy to get his music heard.
After "legal battles," Danger Mouse's new album has been shelved by his label, EMI. But fearful that his work would never be heard, Danger Mouse came up with an idea to get his music out there while at the same time showing his anger at EMI. The album, entitled Dark Night of the Soul, will be sold as a "100+ page book" of photographs inspired by the music and taken by David Lynch, and will include a blank CD-R to be filled with torrented mp3s. All copies will be clearly labelled:
'For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'
Danger Mouse made his name with a mashup of The Beatles' White Album and Jay-Z's Black Album titled, of course, The Grey Album, which was only available through non-commercial means, so this is a guy who despite his success is very aware of the state of music sales. Dark Night of the Soul is already available to stream for free from NPR, so it looks like Danger Mouse is going all out with his plan to thoroughly infuriate his record label.

I'm confused. Why would the CD contain "torrented" MP3's? Did Danger Mouse put the album up on a torrent, download it, and then put the files on CD? Or did they mean the MP3's on the CD are to be torrented?
Or...are they saying the CD contains a torrent file you can use to download the MP3's?

It is a blank CD-R, he (Danger Mouse) wants you to find the MP3's online and then use the CD-R to burn the album yourself.

But no, it isn't really.

I downloaded it and liked it but I think it would have worked better as an instrumental piece. The vocals ruin a lot of the songs imo.

He wrote all the songs, so yeah that's what I mean. $50 for a book and a blank disc is a little rich for my blood. I'm hoping for another Sparklehorse album and/or tour soon though.

This has got to be the single most creative middle finger to the industry that I have seen. Props to Danger Mouse for sticking to his guns.
However, I do agree that a TON of people will return it.

Sticking it to the man? His label is still getting paid. Way to stick it.
Are there FLAC/SHN versions of it?

The book of David Lynch photography/art is worth the $50 to me. I pre-ordered.
I'll hold off on listening to the album (already downloaded) until I have the book in hand.
Can't wait!

The book version is, which also comes with a poster. However, for $10, you can get an alternate poster and blank CD-R:

It looks like the CD-Rs come with custom printed labels.

One year later... update!
So, now that they've worked out their problems with EMI, this album is finally getting an official release (with a real CD!)
http://dnots.com/buy/
Three versions:
- Standard CD
- 2 LP Vinyl
- Deluxe Edition (2 LP Vinyl, 2 x CD - second disc is instrumentals, book of David Lynch photographry, a poster, and lobby cards)
I already paid $50 for the CD-R version... but I've pre-ordered the Deluxe edition as well. I really like the album.
For those of you that are interested in the Deluxe Edition, it's limited to 5000 copies. It's $78.98 on Amazon.com... or $47.99 on Amazon.ca. Even with shipping to the US, you'll still be paying less if you order from amazon.ca.
