Ok so little bro and i were debating who was the "better" of the two.

Phil Collins:

-Many well known hits
-Constant sound from album to album
-More radio friendly
-Frequency of releases decent
-Great live show

Peter Gabriel:

-Innovative music videos
-Sonic collage on songs
-Many well known hits
-Frequency of releases terrible (meaning he takes forever!)
-Great soundtrack work
-Live shows a multimedia experience

On last thing of note, I feel that Phil Collins more ballady and soundtrack works come off as kind of cheesy. Peter Gabriel's tend to be much more balanced and substantial.

I vote for Peter Gabriel.

Phil Collins is also a very talented drummer....not just a songwriter. I'd go with him even though I don't care for him or his music.

This is easy Gabriel has my vote. However his music takes some time to grow on you compared to the Collins poppy music. I saw the Musical Box last year and I was hooked!

I agree with both comments. Phil is an amazing drummer...watch the live DVD for proof.

I also agree that Peter Gabriel is an acquired taste. But once you get into it, it tends to be amazing.

Have to go with Peter Gabriel. Collins is too commercial for my taste.

This is like asking me to pick between my daughters... Luckily for us, I can do that. Just like with them, I like the one that came later a little more - Collins.

I like the '80's version of both of them. Don't really know their 70's stuff and you can keep both of their 90's and 00's music.

My vote still goes to Peter Gabriel.

As far as solo material, Gabriel, no contest. God I love PG 3 (melt) and Security. So isn't too bad either.

As far as what Genesis incarnation, I like the Collins stuff from the later 70's best. A Trick Of The Tail is my favorite.

Well, keeping this debate merely to GENESIS, obviously Gabriel.

Gabriel without a doubt, he's been a far more influential and interesting musician.

That said, I do still rate Collins decently; I have a goofy love for a lot of his Genesis work and early solo stuff. But around 1989 or so he just went off the rails and gave in to his sentimental side. I haven't heard anything decent from him since.

As musicians, Phil Collins is a much better drummer than Peter Gabriel. As artists, Peter Gabriel is one of the most consistently interesting, challenging, and engaging popular musical artists of the late 20th century. Gabriel without a doubt. And Genesis was so much better when Gabriel was with them, as well.

I don't dislike Collins, but this isn't really a hard choice to make.

I think as a whole, there are more Phil songs that I love, but artistically, Peter is miles ahead of him. But it is frustrating that he works at such a sluggish pace. He's only released two proper albums since "So" and that was 23 years ago.

My favorite Genesis stuff is the period from Trick Of The Tail thru Duke, so I'll go with Phil there. His early solo stuff was also very good, although pop music. Gabriel's solo stuff has all been very good, save for the second album and Up.

I prefer Peter Gabriel for solo work but actually prefer Collins' work with Genesis.

The difference between Collins and Gabriel is like the difference between a hamburger and a fine steak. A hamburger's easily available and often cheesy. Still, they're usually kind of tasty. A fine steak, on the other hand, isn't as easy to come by but is so savory you forget the sad fact that you only get it on occasion.

How about a difficult question -- Lou Reed or John Cale; Bryan Ferry or Brian Eno; Diamond Dave or Sammy Hagar; Syd, Waters, or post-Waters?

I knew Phil would get killed here. He's not Peter Gabriel, that's a given. Still I agree that I like his Genesis stuff a lot, probably more that Gabriel's (until after Invisible Touch when it all went to the crapper). I voted for both, because honestly I like both artists. For a commercial record, No Jacket Required was damn fine pop and Face Value is a great album as well (admittedly, neither is in the same league as So, but they're certainly not bad).

I was rather disappointed with Gabriel's recent works, but I must say "Down To Earth" from Wall-E is a friggin masterpiece. How a song that beautiful could not only be a Disney theme, but one that works thematically and emotionally with the film is a testament to the brilliance of both Pixar and Gabriel.

Both of them it's like (( red & white wine )) one is refined and other is just fun!
