Not that it's going to settle any debate here, but I find that Phil Collins-era Genesis is very soothing for baby boys undergoing circumcision in my office. Had a little guy today screaming his head off. Thought of this thread and took out my iphone clone. Popped on a little Land Of Confusion, Tonight Tonight and In Too Deep (cue ironic song-title joke there), and that guy went into a contented restful trance while terrible things happened down below. If that's not a ringing endorsement of Phil, I don't know what is.

Very interesting videos.
Unrelated to the music - I was just browsing Gabriel's Wiki entry. I figured he was older than he is (59) due to his apperance. That said I can't belive he just had another kid last year.

Gabriel all the way. 3 is by far one of the best albums ever, period.
If Phil had done an album that was all in vein of "In the Air Tonight", the question would be tougher for me to answer.

I remember hearing some quote about Phil Collins years ago, "He could have been a John Lennon, but instead he chose to be a Paul McCartney." I think that accurately sums up the direction his career went after the promise of Face Value.

Re: Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel
I worked in a import CD store in Kansas City back in 1989. The owner was friends with Phil Collins and ran his fan club. I got to go through bags of letters and do data entry on the return addresses. Phil called one time and I didn't want to answer the phone and asked another employee to do it. There went my brush with the mild one.

I've recently picked up the Genesis 1970-1975 and 1976-1982 box sets, and listening to the albums back-to-back really makes it clear how much more of an expressive singer and showman Peter Gabriel is versus Phil Collins. Listen to the more dramatic Gabriel-era Genesis songs, such as The Musical Box or Supper's Ready, and then contrast those with Eleventh Earl of Mar or Dance On A Volcano, and it's no contest. Of course, Collins found more of his own voice starting on Duke, but even so. Listening to later tracks like Abacab, he's got some force in his voice, but nothing like the expressive nature of Gabriel's contemporary work. Listen to I Don't Remember or Family Snapshot from PG3 and compare that to Collins' voice work on Duke and Abacab. Not even close.

Anyone else finding it impossible to hear the opening bars of "Solsbury Hill" without thinking of this trailer:

Peter Gabriel is an amazing artist who has been highly influential in a number of areas, including videos and multimedia, getting exposure for world music artists and staging benefit concerts for a variety of causes, superlative soundtrack work and digital recording technology.
Phil Collins was an above average drummer that had some catchy hits in the 80s.

Speaking of Bruford, anytime I think of him I think of that Evening Of Yes Music show with ABWH where he's playing his electronic drums behind the kit with his back to crowd. He's wearing something like an Asian-style outfit and shaking his butt. Always cracks me up. Yes - possibly the ugliest band ever!

Re: Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel
I'd say his work with Yes was probably the most rock that he ever got, his stuff with King Crimson can get way way out there.
Alan White always seemed so bland in comparison to Bruford. Listen to the drum fill near the opening of the first track of Tales From Topographic Oceans. It's so lethargic and it almost sounds like White is stumbling over his kit. Bruford would have filled that space with something provocative and interesting.

I held Peter Gabriel's tea while he signed some autographs on paper plates backstage during the Up tour for some annoying Brazilian girls. I couldn't say anything! He's like my favorite artist after David Bowie. I got there thanks to Tony Levin who I interviewed before that. OK, here's that:
