These "best" threads are essentially just people's opinions. That's his.

I'm going to copy what I wrote in a "Favorite Dylan Cover" thread from a few years ago. It's still true.

Kenny Aronoff provides a great drum track and Lisa Germano adds a fiddle solo that should be out of place and superfluous, but it actually fits into the song just splendidly. It's just a perfect rendition of a perfect song and maybe my favorite cover of all time.
Of course, the difference between then and now is that now I can show everyone what I was talking about.

Tesla "Signs"
Tesla "Games People Play"
Tesla "Cotton Fields"
Tesla "War Pigs"
Tesla "Do You Feel Like We Do"
Hell, both of the Real To Reel CDs are good.

I like most of Poison's Poison'd CD but "Sexy Back" is one of the worst.

I hadn't heard that Mellencamp cover Decker. That's solid. I hadn't heard the With A Little Help From My Friends (Bon Jovi) either. It was pretty good, but no one can come close to Joe Cocker on that one.

I love that Tesla set. My personal favorite off it though is Ball of Confusion.

Here's another one that I love:

Shinedown - Simple Man

I totally agree with this one. The Pumpkins' version is almost unrecognizable - they took a brash electronic track and turned it into a warm, bluesy, organic-sounding number. Very nicely done.

I'm generally not a fan of covers, especially anyone who has the audacity to cover The Beatles (although I do like Fiona Apple's "Across The Universe" and, of course, the versions featured in the movie of the same name, and Elliott Smith's cover of "Because"), but here are some I do like:

Ugly Kid Joe "Cats In The Cradle"
Nine Inch Nails "Dead Souls"
Def Leppard "20th Century Boy"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Higher Ground"

Um... I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones that jump to mind. I like them infinitely better than the originals.

Now, as far as worst cover songs go, I hate hate HATE 311's "Lovesong" cover (why even bother trying to cover The Cure) and Tori Amos' "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

That's a fucking great one. Speaking of Beatles covers, other than Joe Cocker my #2 would have to be Eddie Vedder covering You've got to hide your love away:

Which in turn reminds me of Pearl Jam's Last Kiss which is also great.

The Deftones did a really good cover of If only tonight we could sleep at the MTV ICON for The Cure. It is on their B-sides collection. There is also a very cool album of Latin artists coving The Cure.

From: Northern New Jersey...or as we say it "Sopranos Country USA"
Tom Waits - The Return Of Jackie & Judy (The Ramones)
Joey Ramone - What A Wonderful World (Louie Armstrong)
Atreyu - You Give Love A Bad Name (Bon Jovi)
Manfred Man & The Earth Band - Blinded By The Light (Bruce Springsteen)
Megadeth - Paranoid (Black Sabbath)
Fall Out Boy - Beat It (Michael Jackson)
Bruce Springsteen - Jersey Girl (Tom Waits....I think Bruce has only done that one live, I don't recall if there was a studio version done...and ironically most people from New Jersey will tell you that Bruce was the one who wrote it)

*EDIT I recalled two more as I was typing....

Tom Waits - Sea of Love (I forget who did it originally)
Clutch - Who's Been Talkin' (Howlin' Wolf)

One cover I really like from one of my favorite artists is Aimee Mann's cover of Coldplay's The Scientist. Her version is very pretty.

Click below for the audio of the song.
