This John Mayer guy...

Does anyone here like this guy? Does he only have female fans? Well, since we're pretty anonymous...I'm a fan...and I'm male. My favorite cds of his are "Room For Squares" and "Heavier Things." I can't understand how he's not one of the biggest selling singers of all time...seriously! I think the guy is incredible, but it seems like he doesn't enjoy singing the "pop" songs that got him noticed. I just picked up his new dvd and here's some observations:

1.) I prefer him singing acoustic.
2.) His face looks kinda disturbing while he's singing.
3.) Get rid of most of that blues music and the band.

So be honest...am I the only one who likes this guy?

Rypro 525 07-03-08 12:30 AM

my brother likes his older stuff. I personally can't stand him, that and the fact that he's banging the most overrated 'hot' chick in history currently, cause thats all the celeb sites talk about.

DaveWadding 07-03-08 12:42 AM

I like him...own all his CDs, seen him on tour...but I definitely prefer him with the Trio and playing the blues.

Decker 07-03-08 01:34 AM

I'm with you Dave. I love Try! , It's his best album. I loved the theme of his first hit "No Such Thing", which was that who you were in high school doesn't mean thing ten years later. His new hit "Say" is just unlistenable, but most of his other stuff is pretty good. I think he's the first genuine superstar singer/songwriter with a R&R HOF future to come along since Sheryl Crow in 1994.

The Cow 07-03-08 01:42 AM

I don't care for his music.

No hate, he's just never done anything that has apealed to me.

big whoppa 07-03-08 02:27 AM

AC loves his stuff. I can't stand it after the hundredth time.

The Bus 07-03-08 07:57 AM

He's OK. I decided he was a terrible lyricist when he included the phrase "running through the halls of my high school"... what the hell.

JPRaup 07-03-08 08:37 AM

He is good, just boring, like Coldplay.

Groucho 07-03-08 08:48 AM

His appearance on Dave Chappele's show was pretty funny.

wendersfan 07-03-08 09:39 AM

He's a great guitar player but I have no interest in listening to his music.

Goat3001 07-03-08 09:46 AM

I think he's one of the best guitarists around and he seems like a pretty cool guy from watching him on Chappelle. I have Continuum which I thought was just ok. It was worth a listen or two but thats it. JM Trio is better, but I'm still meh on it.

Part of me wishes he would hook up with a great vocalist/lyricist. Kinda like what Audioslave did. That could be very interesting if he just played guitar. The other part of me is happy that he is making music he likes, even if not many other people do.

slop101 07-03-08 10:04 AM

He's a talented musician who happens to write shit songs.

Green Smurf 07-03-08 10:14 AM

Saw his concert last night, and I think his main problem is, that's he "hollywood". The legends that he models himself after were people who lead not his life. He wants to be a blues artist with out the soul to make it work. He's a great guitarist but his profile is of such that he won't be known as the next Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Hollowgen 07-03-08 10:38 AM

seems like a funny guy (see: chappelle's show) but other than that his music makes me want to sleep (forever)

The Infidel 07-03-08 10:43 AM

Saw him on Austin City Limits doing some SRV songs with Double Trouble. Not too shabby.

conscience 07-03-08 10:48 AM

I liked one of his songs because of the instrumentation until it was played out to death (that one about change) - other than that I can't stand to hear him sing - the body wonderland song is a perfect example: too breathy.

John Mayer Trio > John Mayer

maxfisher 07-03-08 11:01 AM

I hate him. I found his music boring to start with, then I dated a girl that was obsessed with him. She had his shit all over her room, like something you'd expect from a high schooler. Above her bed, she had a picture of her with the crew that set up the stage for one of his shows, framed with a pick he'd thrown into the audience. She was 24. It was creepy and soured me on him for good.

Darth Maher 07-03-08 11:28 AM

I like him. My wife and sister got tickets to see him (when "Heavier Things" came out) and I figured, "sure, get me a ticket." It was pretty good. We own his three popular CDs. I've been meaning to get Trio just to hear it.

boredsilly 07-03-08 11:40 AM

I like him a lot. I listened to Room For Squares consistently for a few months, and still spin it every now and again. I think he writes catchy ass tunes.

That's some crazy stalker crap.

Yeah, I would hate the guy that my girlfriend wants to bang too. ;)

Ex-girlfriend, by 4 years now, mostly due to the creepy infatuation. Well, that and general emotional instability and the fact that she had a pet rabbit that ran wild in her apartment. Ok, so she was a headcase in general, but it definitely pushed my taste for Mayer from indifference to active dislike.

Was she at least hot?

nothingfails 07-03-08 01:35 PM

I much prefer him solo than with the band. I am just not a blues person, I prefer him by himself

you obviously haven't met any Justin Timberlake fans. Fangirls are like that, John Mayer just makes a different type of music, but girls are obsessed with their heartthrobs.

Yeah, but she was one of those types that knew it and constantly had to talk about it. One of those girls that's great on the surface and becomes less and less appealing the more you get to know them. Just to keep the thread on topic, I'll go ahead and blame John Mayer for making her that way.

DeanoBKN 07-03-08 02:45 PM

He's decent. I own some of his albums, and listen to them when I want to mellow out. I was going to see him in concert with my ex 2 summer's ago, but he canceled last minute because he wasn't feeling well. Oh well.

He gets a lot of hot celebrity chick of the day. What is it? Must have a big dick or something.

db27 07-03-08 10:34 PM

great guitar player, love the bluesy stuff he does with the trio but don't care for any of his pop stuff.

Tarantino 07-03-08 10:59 PM

The 'Beat It' cover by Fall Out Boy is horrible, except for the John Mayer guitar solo. He's an amazing guitarist.

= J

nothingfails 07-04-08 03:20 PM

I don't get the hate for "Say", it's a great song that everyone who has ever lost someone can identify with. Plus, it reminds me more of the first two albums. I am just not a blues person, it's the reason why I never could get into Clapton, so I prefer Mayer as more of a male Sheryl Crow type

C_Fletch 07-19-08 09:27 PM

3.) Get rid of most of that blues music and the band.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the BEST thing about him. I had very little respect for him as an axe player until I saw him on the Crossroads Festival DVD and I was FLOORED. That kid can play and well.

Decker 07-20-08 01:33 AM

Did anyone else see his new DVD? The Trio tackle Hendrix's "Wait Til Tomorrow" and my God, Mayer's solo is SCORTCHING!

This version isn't as goodas the Nokia Theater one, but at least it gives you an idea. Dude's got talent.

slop101 07-20-08 05:36 PM

He certainly hits all the correct notes, but I can't recall hearing a more bland and innocuous guitar player with so little discernible style of his own.

Burgundy LaRue 07-21-08 03:33 PM

Mayer is the perfect example of a singer/musician trying to be something he's not. The pop tunes is where he makes his fortune. His record company will insist that he makes that kind of music because it's good business. And that's where his best talents lie. But somewhere down the road, Mayer decided that he wanted to be seen as a serious musician and not some pretty-boy pop singer whose main claim to fame is penning "Your Body is a Wonderland," so he plays alongside B.B. King and Eric Clapton to get some cred. But he doesn't have what it takes to pull it off. Sure, he can play the right notes, but it sounds hollow coming from him. There's no bite to the bark, if you will.

Mayer is indeed talented, but he's better off sticking to the pop stuff and expanding within that area. Because a big-time blues man, he ain't.

Goat3001 07-21-08 03:39 PM

^I agree and disagree. Is John Mayer the 'big time blues'? Nah. Should he be making that pop stuff? Hell no. Forget about how talented Mayer is (or is not) the best part is that he is going out there and making the music that he enjoys. There are so many muscians out there that get slammed for selling out and going away from what the fans like to do something that MTV likes. John Mayer may not have a ton of fans making the blues but it is what he wants to do and I respect that he isn't caving and doing the pop music because he feels more people will like it.

Mayer is in a tough spot. Move too far into the blues and he alienates the fans who buy his mainstream music and pay his bills. Remain too pop in sound and he's seen as a lightweight without actual talent.

Personally, I would prefer if Mayer just focused more energy on his blues-oriented stuff. Truth be told, he's not awful at it. He'll never have the world-weary flavor to his songs, but he's acceptable. But he's straddling the fence and until he can or will make the decision to go in either direction completely, it's going to be awkward for him as an artist.

shaun3000 07-22-08 12:10 PM

I don't think that will last much longer: He's playing sold-out shows, this summer, and doesn't have a new album out. (Any Given whatever doesn't count, it's a concert album) Dude seems very humbled with his success but is obviously enjoying it. (And not ashamed to say it) He seems to love what he does and I would imagine his next album(s) will delve more into blues, though his current music isn't really that far off. (Listen to the lyrics)
