I had been thinking about picking this up as an introduction to the Faces, and finally took the plunge and bought it.

I had heard nothing but good things about it, but as a 28 year old male, a great majority of the Rod Stewart music I know much about pretty much sucks. I do kinda like "Young Turks" though, but really as a guilty pleasure more than anything

Anyway, it is a great set! I like all of the songs on it pretty well (except You can make me dance, sing or anything). One of those things where I wonder why I didn't buy it sooner. It's weird to hear Rod Stewart's voice over something so raw. Pretty good stuff.

I may even buy Rod Stewart's first 4 albums, because the guy at the record store recommended them.

Anyway, I just wanted to start a discussion about The Faces and see if anyone else had much of an opinion about them.

I never really listened to any of there music but I did just read a little caption in I believe Rolling Stone about them being in talks to tour again!

The Five Guys Walk Into A Bar 4-cd set from Rhino is a must have. All The Faces you'll ever need. You want to hear Rod's voice over something raw? Check out the two Jeff Beck Group cds Truth andBeck-ola . Best way to describe them is Rod singing for Led Zeppelin. Ron Wood is on bass. After those two albums Stewart and Wood formed Faces. At the time Rod was doing his solo Mercury stuff and in the Faces the tours would always be The Faces. After Rod hit it big with Maggie May the tours were Rod Stewart and the Faces. The Rhino set has great live versions of Maggie May and (I Know) I'm Losing You. Even though The Faces last LP was in '73, the band stayed together and continued touring with Rod right up to the time Wood joined the Stones in '76. They also put out some non-LP 45s from 73-75. Get the two Beck Group albums, the Faces box set from Rhino, and Rod's complete Mercury Recordings set and you'll have all the earlier great Stewart stuff. I reccomend getting the Mercury recordings set over the individual albums because it contains all the non-lp 45s and b-sides.

And Kenny Jones is one kickass drummer. He replaced Keith Moon in The Who and I wish they would put out the 1982 Toronto show on dvd with Kenny on drums.

I've got a fantastic bootleg of a '74 show they did in Detroit if anyone would like me to upload it. I especially like the two Sam Cooke songs they do.

I should mention that I'm a much bigger Small Faces fan, but The Faces are still one of my favorite bands. I second third the Five Guys Walk Into a Bar set. There's a one hour live in the studio concert that gets shown on VH1 Classics from time to time. Well worth watching.

I've always disagreed with the majority opinion that Rod started to suck when he left Mercury for WB. The first two WB albums, Atlantic Crossing and Night On The Town are good solid efforts with many really good songs. I think both are better than the final Mercury album, Smiler. After that is when things go downhill like a freight train without brakes. Although the later albums contain a few covers, like Keep Me Hanging On and Standing In The Shadows, that are worth a download.

I always liked "I Was Only Joking" from Foot Loose and Fancy Free. Guns N' Roses covered it live a few times back in their heyday. I grew up with 80's Rod Stewart so that era of his career has always been a guilty pleasure.

I too have Five Guys Walk Into a Bar and highly recommend it. My favorite Faces tune is Bad 'n' Ruin. Check it out.

- Jeff Becks first 2 albums w/ Stewart (Truth & Beck-Ola)
- Rod's first 4 solo albums (the band he uses is essentially The Faces)
- Faces' 4 albums (complemented well with their boxed set that has a lot of extra tracks not on those albums)

Are all essential purchases if you're into raw-dirty rock.
