Great topic. I used to collect film scores when I was very young (around 9 or so I started buying them) so I'll exclude those, but my first modern rock/pop vinyl purchase was Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Welcome to the Pleasuredome". My first CD purchase was Steve Vai's "Passion and Warfare".
|
Steve Vai's Flex-Able
I didn't even have a CD player at the time, but it had extra tracks not on the tape, so I had to get it. |

First LP: Themes from the Movies. It was one of those cheapo '70s movie theme compilations on the Peter Pan label. The arrangements were full of that cheesy orchestra/disco stuff.
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/3...tgotftmlf1.jpg First cassette: The Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. First CD: Time Warp (Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops sci-fi movie theme compilation). |
1983 -> 1st Album: Talking Heads "Speaking in Tongues"
1984 -> 1st CD: The Very Best of Elvis Costello & The Attaractions, & The Thompson Twins "Into the Gap" |
1990 - First cassette: I want to say something awesome and cool, but considering I was only 9 years old, I'm pretty sure it was Weird Al's Greatest Hits.
1995 - First CD: A two-fer, The Beatles 1962 - 1966 and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. That was pretty much a mind-shattering day. |
First Album - Billy Joel - Glass Houses 1980 (on tape for my first boom box).
First CD - Paul Simon - Graceland 1986 (for the portable CD player I got for Christmas, which must have cost around $250, iirc). |
forgot what my first CD purchase was but my first cassette tape was Crush by OMD (Orchestral Manoevuere's in the Dark). last CD purchases were The Eagles' Long Road out of Eden and the Police's two-disc greatest hits.

First LP - Star Wars soundtrack
First CD - Full Swing - In Full Swing (1987) |
