Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Anyone have a link to the video that works? The video on weirdal.com doesn't load for me (and other people apparently). All the other videos work perfectly fine.
edit: looks like it works for me now. :) |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I think it's supposed to be an exclusive to a site called popcrush. It's hosted on vevo, but I think you can only watch it on popcrush and weirdal.com at the moment. Here's the popcrush link, but it's still hosted at vevo on both sites, so if it didn't work at weirdal.com, it probably won't work here either

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Actually popcrush is where I found the working embed, and it still doesn't work on weirdal.com for me. I'm guessing popcrush has it exclusive for the day, then Al's link will work tomorrow.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I dunno... I watched it this morning on weirdal.com
Weird. EDIT: Just checked and it still works for me  |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Hmm. Could be a regional thing? the popcrush link works for me, so I'm happy. :)
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Not working on weird al's website for me either.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I can't see it either.
BTW I didn't see this posted yet, but he did a "Talks at Google" yesterday: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/EJk3pLWxs4o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Love the First World Problems video. Feels like a classic Al video. I couldn't get it to work on his website, either.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I liked First World Problems a lot too, and even though I'm not a huge fan of Sports Song, It's awesome that we're getting live action videos for his originals. That hasn't happened very often.
I mean other than this, we've got what? Dare to Be Stupid and Craigslist? I guess you could count "Bob" too, but I think that was a bit he did for his short lived TV show. |

This Is the Life Dare to Be Stupid One More Minute Christmas at Ground Zero UHF You Don't Love Me Anymore Spy Hard Bob Craigslist "Bob" was on AlTV in 2003 or something like that. Not sure if it was made for that or as a video to play during costume changes on tour. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Wow, I can't believe I forgot that many. And I've seen all of those. Actually, You Don't Love Me Anymore did come to mind, but for some reason I was thinking it was a short that didn't cover the whole song. I'm getting old.
And AL TV was always dual purpose, to promote his album and to provide content to play on tour. :) EDIT: And looking Back, 3 of those are from Dare to Be Stupid. It's probably his only album where the originals got just as much (if not more) attention than the parodies. |

Not sure, but if you're looking to grab it, it's 5.99 on Amazon MP3 right now.
EDIT: I tried to do a little research on the topic, and though it doesn't specifically reference amazon or eMusic, I found this on Billboard's site:

Just to show you how completely out if touch with modern culture I am, I assumed "Fancy" was the Reba song. Love "Word Crimes" as a notorious grammar nazi :D.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I'm guessing that the last video will be for Inactive. It's the last straight parody left.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Lame Claim to Fame - Fun one to watch. Lots of little things to look for all around the video.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
OK, I was way off on the last pick.
The final video is Mission Statement, and believe it or not, the host for it is the Wall Street Journal. The link isn't working yet, but jeez, I never thought I'd see Weird Al teaming up with the WSJ. http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2014/...ent-exclusive/ OK, it works at the link, but embedding didn't work. Oh well, it's animated, and I'd say the worst of the 8. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Interesting little story on http://www.truscribe.com/ about the making of this last one.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I was really hoping for an Inactive video. Easily my favorite song on the album.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Are there NO plans to produce videos for the remaining songs on the album, or is it possible that it'll happen at a later date? I'm really surprised Inactive wasn't one of them, honestly. It was such an obvious choice. I could see him doing that one later, kind of like a real "single."

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I think it's possible we could get animated videos later (we got an animated video later for the polka medley on the last album), but I wouldn't expect as much care to be put into them as these. More along the lines of the animated videos we got on the last couple of albums which he wasn't heavily involved in.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Apparently, today is the 25th Anniversary of UHF. "Sometimes you have to grab life by the lips and YANK as hard as you can." That's a
Blu ray release I could get behind! |

Kind of Meh on Mission Statement... It's full of annoying corporate speak that I can't stand. I swear that it seems, at times, managers create these "catch phrases" and words just to make themselves sound intelligent when all they are doing is stringing long words together because if it sounds like a complex word it must be impressive.
Al is on ABC World News Tonight, if anyone is interested. I can't believe UHF is 25 years old. I'm glad I still have the DVD because it doesn't seem like Fox is is any hurry to put out a BD. |

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Listened to the album a few times. Pretty damn solid album. So far:
1. Handy - fun little parody, but seems cut short. Is Fancy like that? 2. Lame Claim to Fame - Great original. Love the Kevin Bacon bit. Also like the "Camel Walk" inspired/pseudo cover music. 3. Foil - genius. Love it. 2 verses, that's it? Feels super short as well. 4. Sports Song - Good fun & creative original, but I'm not sure how often I'll want to hear marching band music. 5. Word Crimes - AWESOME. Al going all 'Schoolhouse Rock' on us. Probably my 2nd favorite track. 6. My Own Eyes - no thoughts, I generally skip it. I need to listen to it a few more times. 7. Now that's what I call Polka - gotta be honest, I usually skip the polka tracks, but this one is fantastic. 8. Mission Statement - Agree with Obi-Wan Jabroni, great concept just not very good. Love the retro vibe though. 9. Inactive - #1 track, IMO. Funny beginning to end. Love every bit of it. 10. First World Problems - Funny original but not very catchy 11. Tacky - Very fun, but still super catchy due to how catchy the original is. 12. Jackson Park Express - Kinda like Mission Statement, good concept, but not all that great. |

If this is accurate, Al not only claimed the #1 spot, but he did so by a massive margin of 20,000 albums! |

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
If anyone cares Weird Al about to be on Bill Handel show on KFI here in SoCal.
Fire up "iHeartRadio" app and go to KFI am 640 or I think you can listen through the web. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
It's official... Al is number one!
http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200 Also, "Word Crimes" cracked the Top 40 at #39. That actually makes it his fourth highest charting single behind "White & Nerdy" (#9), "Eat It" (#12), and "Smells Like Nirvana" (#35). |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I have a hard time believing that this will really be his last traditional album after it debuts at #1.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I can see that, but there's also something to be said about going out on top. Besides, he's right that he just needs to focus on singles as they hit rather than waiting for a solid 12 every few years.

Maybe now he can focus his attention on a UHF sequel. :) |

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
If Al did a modern sequel to UHF, where would his channel reside? Roku?
Actually, a straight-up sequel, taking place immediately after the first one, would be hilarious. Bring everyone back (that isn't dead or batshit crazy...) and just pretend that they haven't aged. |
