Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
The main problem I have with Al only releasing digital singles in the future is how this will affect his original songs. I like some of his originals more than the parodies on some albums. I can't imagine John Q. Public purchasing a Weird Al non-parody on iTunes. That's what is so great about the traditional albums.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
If the "UHF" sequel took place in the real world, Kevin McCarthy's character would come back and buy the station after relaxed FCC laws allowed him to own 2 stations in the same market, and he'd turn it into a Fox or CW affiliate and run infomercials in the off-hours :(

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
This will not be a popular opinion, and I'm glad that Al is #1 after all this time (and I am a super fan, I begged my parents to take me to see him when I was 8!!) but I have to say this overall is one of his weakest albums. I think there was more of an emphasis on silly quickly produced videos than actual songwriting. There is nothing on this anywhere near stuff like White and Nerdy, Ricky, Beverly Hillbillies, Fat, Dare to be Stupid, Smells Like Nirvana, Yoda, etc. Really, Word Crimes is probably the best song on the record. The rest is just meh. I think Alpocalypse was much better. Still, I am happy for his mainstream success. Hopefully this keeps him going a bit longer.

Listened to a lot of his box set on a road trip today and I'd have to disagree. A lot of those older songs just don't hold up for me. I love the new album however.

I'd argue that Bad Hair Day is his most consistent and best album for me, given what I was listening to in 1996 and what I still listen to today. Same goes for Running with Scissors, although some of that is because that was the first tour I saw him live and met him in person. I listen to a lot of New Wave and 80s music in general, so his older albums still hold up to me. I'd put Alapalooza, Poodle Hat, and Polka Party at the bottom of the list, though. Between the parodies themselves and the originals, I'd say those are "the worst" (as in the albums of his I listen to least). |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Al was on this week's episode of the Tom Green Show discussing this new album.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Shout Factory is releasing UHF on Blu ray and The Compleat Al on DVD in November.

I don't listen to all of "Alapalooza" much, but I seriously can't get enough of "Frank's 2000" TV". And "Bedrock Anthem" is choice quoting whenever "Give it Away" comes on the radio. But "Albuquerque" is the greatest song ever recorded. |

You can stop that speculation train you had going above:

I wrote a script for a Cartoon Network made-for-tv movie a few years ago. We had a deal and everything. We were getting ready to go into pre-production and the whole thing just fell apart. It taught me to never talk about things until they happen. I'm working on a few things now I'm not ready to talk about them. But if the right opportunity presents itself, I would love another shot at making a movie." |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I still think that one of his best parody was the one of James Blunt called "You are Pitiful". I believe James Blunt's record company wouldn't let him release the single for some reason.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Yeah, that was the deal. But he had gotten permission from James Blunt himself and had already recorded it, so he put it up for free on his website.

This petition to have Al play the Super Bowl halftime show has already collected over 30,000 signatures, and is drawing media attention. I do not believe for a second that the NFL will react to it, but it's fun, I signed it.

http://www.change.org/petitions/nfl-...-halftime-show I wonder what happened with the petition to get him on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (why he's not yet is still kind of surprising). |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Has he ever been given serious consideration for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Normally a novelty/comedy artist wouldn't merit such an honor, but he is the king of them.
Imagine him performing a polka medley of that year's inductees' songs. |

I am the biggest Al fan I know and there's no way he'll play at the Super Bowl. I'm sure that's already set anyway. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Julian Bond of the NY Daily News wrote about having Weird Al perform at the Super Bowl back in 2012.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
2015 Tour Dates announced on weirdal.com today. I'm bumming because I wanted to take my kids to their first Al show this summer and the only one in the area is at Caesars Windsor and Ticketmaster has it listed as an ages 19+ show. Lame.
It's also a dumb move by the venue IMO, as at least half the audience has been kids at every Al show I've ever been to. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I'm assuming So Cal dates are forthcoming, probably after Aug. 23rd since he's got a break there.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I also hate the venue he's playing at in Denver. If I can get seats at the front of a section, I might go for it.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
June 21st in Dayton, I'm in. Thanks for posting this.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Five days at Hard Rock in Vegas! I hope that's an all-age show. My daughter really enjoyed his last show here a couple of years ago and my little boy loves his stuff as well.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Did anyone catch Al in Galavant? He played a singing monk in a small part.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Well, I was refreshing the ticket page at 10am this morning, and at 10:01 there were no two seats available next to each other. Just as well, the tickets were $68 each.
Maybe next time, Al. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
It's not sold out. It was just a pre-sale for his website. The only tickets that were available today were ones in the very front. The rest will go on sale later thru normal avenues (Ticketmaster, Venue Box Office, etc.) and there will be cheaper options available.
The one I'm looking at goes on sale officially on Friday. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I think I just got the last two pair of two at Wolftrap. I can't seem to find another pair available. Not terrible seats, but hot damn were they pricey.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Again, this is only his allocation for the pre-sale. Most (if not all) of these events have not gone on sale officially yet. There are lots of seats left at every venue.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I've never seen Al before but he's coming here so I figured, why not? Got 4 the day they went on sale, $35ea + $10ea service. So about $180. Ouch. Orchestra level row M, so pretty decent.
Fast forward to the day after they go on sale and I get a Groupon email for $20 tickets. Immediate reaction was pissed. Looking into it though it appears the Groupon was for the last X number of rows in the balcony. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
^You will not be disappointed. I challenge anyone to go to an Al show and not have a good time.

This will be my 7th time to see him and I have no problem dropping the cash every couple years. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
He should be playing the Super Bowl today, in my opinion.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
My sister wanted to go to the OKC show, but she wasn't going to be able to buy the tickets when they went on sale, so she had me buy them for her. Was able to get her seats on the eighth row for $70 each, seated literally right next to the $130 VIP fan club seats--tickets for which are all still available today. Most of the $260, first-five-rows, meet-and-greet tickets are gone, but the $130 seats aren't selling at all so far.
