Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Hot damn! Asheville for sure. Wife has wanted to see him live for a long time.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Houston is skipped AGAIN wtf Al??
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
This works for me. He's playing in my hometown in August, and within an hour or two at 2 dates in June and July. I might make plans to see him more than once.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Weird (ha!), no Colorado dates, unless they are added later. I won't be able to go this year regardless, but he's hitting almost every other city in the nation.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Oh, I will take my daughter to a show, without a doubt. Tried to get tickets last year and missed out. This is my year, I know it!
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Holy shit! $269 per ticket to get the after-show meet & greet? Looks like n just normal tickets for my family again.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Tickets are pricey all around. I remember in the good old days where all you had to do to get backstage after the show was to email Bermuda (the drummer, and Al's webmaster) and beg him (yes, that actually worked for me in the late nineties).
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I just got tickets for the Asheville show. Already only balcony seats left!!! And general public tix don't go on sale til Friday. I'm shocked how fast it sold!
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
We saw him last year for the first time and enjoyed him quite a bit. Just picked up decent tix for this years show in Dayton.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Yeah, rule of thumb : If there are only shitty seats available for Presale, just wait for General ticketing. Some of the worst seats I've ever gotten were in Pre-Sales.
Disappointed no Vegas shows this time. Last tour he spent like a week in Vegas, but idiotically they didn't allow children to those shows so I passed. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Dammit. First time I used a pre sale and probably got screwed. Meh, glad to be in the house. We are taking our 8 year old daughter. I think she will enjoy it.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I have been a long time minor fan (I had his first album on vinyl as a kid) but haven't really listened to anything by him since the Star Wars song.
My 11 year old hasn't been to a concert yet and I am thinking this may be a good choice for his first. How is Weird Al live? Is he worth the $200 for us to go (three tickets)? |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Weird Al is awesome live, and I really recommend that anyone who has any interest at all to go check him out live at least once. I'm a little nuts, but I have seen him at least once (and sometimes 2 or 3 times) on every tour since Bad Hair Day. Took my kids for the first time last year, and it was great. You will not be disappointed.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Seems about $100 too much. I own all his albums anyway. Should be a separate pledge for just the rarities CD.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I agree. But I just realized there's three more options, which include less add-ons:
Vinyl Box Set Bundle - $300 Gold CD Box Set Bundle - $225 CD Box Set Bundle - $200 Slightly more reasonable there, but I can't justify $300 on a Weird Al vinyl set myself, and I have no interest in the CDs at this point. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I would pay $20 for the rarities CD by itself. At this point he's making people pirate it.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
For that much they should include all his videos and concert footage.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Love Weird Al but those prices are insane. I'm hoping they are list prices and will decrease, but even if they do, I can't see myself buying any of this since I have most of the CDs anyway.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I'm also interested in the track listing of the rarities album. I have a sneaking suspicion that most of it will be non-album tracks which I already own (stuff like "Headline News", "Spy Hard", "Polkamon", etc.), but I hope to be wrong.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Yeah, the rarities album is exclusive to the box set. You're either buying one of the sets, or pirating it. I wouldn't expect to see it on legal streaming services.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I'm pretty torn. $200 for something that I already own. But they are remastered. The songs on The Essential Weird Al sound great

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
HUGE Al fan, but I think I'll be skipping this. Pretty steep price.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Tough call. A lot of major bands release deluxe remastered box sets for $100-$300 and often it's just for one album. Yet $200 is a lot. Still, I have maybe 2 or 3 CDs, otherwise I didn't upgrade all the cassette tapes I had as a kid. Our kids, meanwhile, love Weird Al, so it's tempting.
|
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I'm really torn. I have all the albums on CD and vinyl of all the albums that had vinyl to begin with.
I would love the vinyl set but wish it came with a download code for the set too as I don't want the rarities album on vinyl only. It would be nice if they even offered a set for a little more that had the vinyl set with the cds included too. Also, for reference, I've listed all of the officially released non-album tracks and alternate versions (that I'm aware of) below. Hopefully most of them will be on the rarities disc. 1. My Bologna (Capital records single version) 2. School Cafeteria (b-side to #1) 3. Happy Birthday (Placebo ep version) 4. Gotta Boogie (Placebo ep version) 5. Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung (Placebo ep version) 6. I Lost on Jeopardy (12" mix) 7. Eat It (karaoke) (from The Food Album - Japanese version) 8. UHF (single version) 9. Jurassic Park (japanese version) 10. Headline News (non-album track) 11. Christmas at Ground Zero (alternate mix) (b-side to +10) 12. The Night Santa Went Crazy (extra gory version) (from Amish Paradise single) 13. Dare to be Stupid (instrumental) (from Amish Paradise single) 14. Spy Hard (from Gump single) 15. Since You've Been Gone (karaoke version) (from Gump single) 16. Callin' in Sick (instrumental) (from Gump single) 17. Spy Hard (instrumental) (from Gump single) 18. Spy Hard (orchestral mix) (from Gump single) 19. The Saga Begins (edit) (from The Saga Begins japanese compilation) 20. Polkamon (from Pokemon 2000 soundtrack) 21. Homer & Marge (from Testify: Simpsons soundtrack) 22. You're Pitiful (Internet-only release) Some of the songs from The Weird Al Show would also be nice but were usually done with the intention of being watched in the context of the show. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
He's already confirmed that You're Pitiful will not be on the release, as James Blunt wouldn't clear it.
Whatever we get, I certainly hope that it's not filled up with instrumentals and alternate versions of other songs. I would love to get some unreleased stuff, if it's possible. |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
Way to stay irrelevant, James Blunt.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
This time he specifically called out James Blunt.
http://weirdal.com/news/youre-pitiful-2/ In 2006, Al did a parody of James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” called “You’re Pitiful” which was initially meant to appear on the Straight Outta Lynwood album. Permission was revoked, and the track was never officially released. We approached James Blunt recently to see if we could include “You’re Pitiful” as a rarity on next year’s box set (Squeeze Box: The Collected Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic) – but again we were told he has denied permission. So, unfortunately, you can’t BUY the song anywhere, but you can still DOWNLOAD IT FOR FREE hundreds of places on the Internet, including here, here, here, here, here and here! |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
There's a sad sort of irony in Al calling out Blount for that but gouging the shit out of his fans for this box set on a crowdfunding site.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
To be fair, in the past "Lady Gaga said no" but it was really management that answered for her and never presented the option, at least that's the story.
Could be the same this here with "he said no". |
Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
When the original parody was released for free on his website, the story he told then was that James Blunt himself had approved the parody, but then Atlantic Records came back and said no after Al had already recorded it. Part of his statement at the time also said that because James Blunt had no problems with the parody, Al had no issue releasing it for free.
Given that, since the new statement names Blunt directly and nobody else, I think it's a fair assumption that he was at least in part responsible for blocking its release this time. |
