"Watergate does not bother me"

The whole point of "Sweet Home Alabama" is that it's a rebuttal to Neil Young's "Southern Man" and they're taking the opportunity to needle the liberal mindset.
(Which is kind of funny when you consider that Neil Young isn't really a liberal. He supported Reagan.)

Here's what Wikipedia says on the matter:

Another claim often made is that the third line of the above verse is in defense of the Watergate scandal. Again, many fans disagree, interpreting the line as either a reminder to critics that the South is not alone in having scandals or as a statement that corruption in politics is nothing exceptional and that it was Americans' own guilty consciences that were truly bothering them during the crisis.

Two key lines of the song are
"In Birmingham they love the governor", implying public approval for the segregationist policies of George Wallace, and
"Yea, yea Montgomery's got the answer", indicating the band's support of the activities of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

Muscle Shoals is a small town in Alabama with a famous recording studio. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, all the top bands/musicians recorded there including The Stones.

BTW...for the 'Freebird'-hating fan...we were watching the animated "Cars" the other night with some friends & 7 of their 8 children. We got a big kick out of the moment early on when all of the cars got quiet waiting for a big speech...then you hear a small voice from the back of the car crowd yell, "Freebird!" (We had to explain the allusion to the hostess...as you can imagine, with 8 kids she doesn't get out to a lot of concerts).
