"Watergate does not bother me"

I never understood this line. How could Lynyrd Skynyrd (sp?) be indifferent to Watergate?

DVD Josh 12-03-06 11:32 PM

What? It's called "tongue in cheek".

Josh-da-man 12-04-06 04:01 AM

The whole point of "Sweet Home Alabama" is that it's a rebuttal to Neil Young's "Southern Man" and they're taking the opportunity to needle the liberal mindset.

(Which is kind of funny when you consider that Neil Young isn't really a liberal. He supported Reagan.)

Here's what Wikipedia says on the matter:

Another claim often made is that the third line of the above verse is in defense of the Watergate scandal. Again, many fans disagree, interpreting the line as either a reminder to critics that the South is not alone in having scandals or as a statement that corruption in politics is nothing exceptional and that it was Americans' own guilty consciences that were truly bothering them during the crisis.

Two key lines of the song are

"In Birmingham they love the governor", implying public approval for the segregationist policies of George Wallace, and

"Yea, yea Montgomery's got the answer", indicating the band's support of the activities of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

Heard "Living with War"? Neil's flirtation with the dark side was short lived. Thankfully.

Neil Young is far superior to Lynyrd Skynyrd, which is all that matters.

Sort of how Toby Keith gets made fun of but he's a Democrat.

"Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers." The "Swampers" were studio musicians who were available if backup was needed.

Muscle Shoals is a small town in Alabama with a famous recording studio. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, all the top bands/musicians recorded there including The Stones.

"I'd rather play 'Sweet Home Alabama' instead of 'Southern Man' any day" - Neil Young.

What about when they say "And the governor's true"? Is that an endorsement of Wallace?

No its not; 'liberal mindset' is a hackneyed phrase ca. FOXNEWS years. The song wuz about a Northerner's overgeneralized condemnation of the South. Watergate being a 'Northern' problem, but not something LS would condemn all Northerners for.

Peace

Doesn't the band follow that line with a "Boo! Boo! Boo!" or am I hearing something different from the actual lyrics?

BTW...for the 'Freebird'-hating fan...we were watching the animated "Cars" the other night with some friends & 7 of their 8 children. We got a big kick out of the moment early on when all of the cars got quiet waiting for a big speech...then you hear a small voice from the back of the car crowd yell, "Freebird!" (We had to explain the allusion to the hostess...as you can imagine, with 8 kids she doesn't get out to a lot of concerts).

Yes, I think that's one of the pints of the song.

Now watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
My interpretation was a literal one, they had no problems with the Republican National Committee breaking into the Democrats office to get information... because they (Lynyrd Skynyrd) didn't have a problem with theft.

Do you have a problem with cheating? Does your conscience bother you?
