I like Siouxsie and the Banshees' entire catalog, from their punk beginnings to their goth/pop end. I like Sleater-Kinney and The Muffs. I just got the Horrorpops "Bring It On" album and it's pretty good. And I wish the Donnas had a bit more of an edge. What should I check out next?

Now that's what I'm talking about. I NEED to get me some Distillers.

I've had the 1st three L7 albums forever. I've got the most recent Le Tigre cd and the Julie Ruin CD but haven't gone into Bikini Kill's catalog at all. I love PJ and have all her albums. I've got a bit of Joan Jett, and the best of the Runaways is currently in my yourmusic.com queue. Love Liz Phair's first album as well (and like the rest of her albums (a bit less each time)).

Lunachicks look interesting. The only thing Decentants related in my collection is All - Pummel. I've heard their stuff from a roommate in college though, and wouldn't mind hearing them again.

I'm liking what I'm hearing from The Buzzcocks. I've heard some stuff by The Jam but haven't been impressed with them though (sorry).

And how could I have never heard of Sahara Hotnights before?

Also, The Misfits (and The Cramps) have had me curious for a while, but I'm not sure they'd jibe with my tastes and I wouldn't know where to start in their collections. Any thoughts?

Misfits: start off with that first collection. Or "Walk Among Us".

Lunachicks: "Jerk Of All Trades", "Babysitters On Acid", & "Binge & Purge" are right up your alley!

Descendents: start off with "Somery" and go from there.

Mensen is also a rockin' all girl band (from Norway, I think. Maybe Sweden).

In which case get a hold of "Something That I Said: The Best of the Ruts".

Also worth listening to from around that time are The [English] Beat. It might also be worth checking out the punkier sound of The Stiff Little Fingers.

Swingin Utters. Very underated band. Five Lessons Learned, self titled, Juvenile Product of the Working Class are probably their three best albums.

Killing Joke (I find Night Time and Brighter than a Thousand Suns to be their most accessible)

New Model Army (Ghost of Cain, Purity, and Thunder and Consolation are my faves)

X (Los Angeles, Under the Big Black Sun, and More Fun in the New World.)

The Slits (Cut) (all-girl, more dub/reggae-ish than punk)

For The Jam, I'd go with Setting Sons or This is the Modern World.

I'm sort of in the sam eplace you are -- I picked up a Ramones collection on a whim a month or two ago and I've been exploring punk ever since. Some more names that haven't been mentioned (some of these are proto-punk or post-punk):

plus, while they're not really punk, I'm really digging T.Rex, and they definitely influenced a lot of punk bands.

That Rhino set looks awesome -- I'm definitely going to have to pick that up.

18 posts and no mention of X-Ray Spex or The Damned? Wow.

Trouble with punk is it really is a 45 format, not too many LPs measure up to the promise of one brilliant 4/4 150 second adrenaline rush. I would recommend samplers. The DIY Rhino issues should be cheap 2nd hand. The best comp before CDs was Burning Ambitions, which has been reissued in abbreviated form from Cherry Red.

On "influences" theme definately check out the Nuggets comp (haven't listened to Nuggets 2 enough to recommend or not) & don't forget The Modern Lovers, & Television.

I always got a kick out of The Undertones 1st LP which is probably more New Wave than punk.
