The Definitive "new-new wave" Thread
So, I'm already getting bored with the trend of bands that sound like Joy Division or The Cars.
I don't want this thread to be a complaining thread though. I was just wondering how long people think the trend will last. Ska had a very brief tenure in the limelight around 1997/1998, but it was overexposed so quickly the entire scene got killed (more or less) in a little over a year, i would estimate.
I think this current trend of new-new wave, a la Interpol, is beginning to wear its' welcome out already as the artists in the genre seem to be very similar to each other. If they were more diverse in sound as they were during the original New Wave, I think it would have more longevity.
I also kind of want to get a list of bands that fall into this category.
So, here's what I have so far:
Interpol
The Editors
Arctic Monkeys
Franz Ferdinand
Kaiser Chiefs
We Are Scientists
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I know there are many more, but i can't think of 'em off the top of my head.
Anyway, opinions? (More bands for the list?) Please, no threadcraps though.

Excellent list, thanks!
IMO, I wouldn't include bands like Arcade Fire or Spoon (as you noted), since they aren't really trying to reinvent (or redo) New Wave... They're just good modern bands!
Overall, a nice list. Thanks again!
How long do you think this trend will be popular? Or, how much longer, should I say?

I wouldn't put Interpol in that list either. Joy Division was never really a new wave band and the other band Interpol emulates (Chameleons UK) is also not really new wave. But, of course, depends on your definition.

Personally, I love the new-new wave movement and don't give a crap that they emulate older bands. I don't get the idea that as soon as something is popular, it must be torn down.
New wave of the 80's never got enough respect as it is.
As far as bands go, Rock Kills Kid has an album coming out on May 16. Of the stuff I have heard so far, it's pretty good.
And The Killers are not a middle band. At least, we won't know for sure till their second album comes out.

I'm surprised we've gotten four posts in on a topic that wants bands similar to Joy Division and we haven't gotten one shout for She Wants Revenge, a band that sounds exactly like them.

Mrs. Pusser and I really enjoyed the Dogs Die In Hot Cars cd. We first heard it on the way to vacation and played the darn thing EIGHT times in a row.
I don't see the Zutons listed. I really enjoyed their eclectic first effort. Their new cd just came out in the UK and I've seen three UK magazine reviews. It's received 2 stars, 3 stars and 4 stars. One of them must be correct!

Bus, I was about to say the same thing. If we're compiling a new wave list, we've got to kick a few off.
Panic! At The Disco is pop punk...there's NO WAY it comes close to being new wave. Modest Mouse? Hell no. The Strokes? Indie New York rock...definitely not new wave. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, We Are Scientists, Stellastarr*, Spoon, The Arcade Fire, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and Franz Ferdinand have to go as well.

I'll bold what I agree with. I hate debating "labels" as it's something that is innately fluid, especially when discussing the increasingly blurred barriers between micro-genres. This is especially true, and irritating, in dance music circles and whenever the topic of emo comes up. I just tend to avoid it altogether.
So let's see what AMG "defines" as "New Wave" - I bolded what I agree with as being the central "definition"...
I would have to say the following bands fit the bill, to some extent:
Dogs Die in Hot Cars
Hard-Fi
Kaiser Chiefs
The Killers / Bravery
Then there's other bands that sort of fit the "rock revival" idea without having to do anything with synthesizers. I don't consider these "new wave" but they share a similar sound or attitude as other artists the past couple of years:
A Band of Bees
Art Brut
Bloc Party
The Dead 60s
Franz Ferdinand
Kings of Leon
the late-90s/early 00s "The" bands: Hives, Strokes, Vines
the "Joy Division" bands: Interpol, Editors, She Wants Revenge
Louis XVI
The Von Bondies
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
There are new bands that in my opinion don't fit any of the above categories:
Arcade Fire
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The Go! Team
The Kooks
The Magic Numbers
Morning Runner
Nine Black Alps
The Subways
Wolf Parade
Of all the bands above, I like most, love some, don't care for others. So a band's inclusion on a list does not mean they're any good.
But, these are all opinions for the most part. So...

Where post-punk was arty, difficult, and challenging, new wave was pop music, pure and simple. It retained the fresh vigor and irreverence of punk music, as well as a fascination with electronics, style, and art. Therefore, there was a lot of stylistic diversity to new wave... there were also countless one-hit wonders that emerged during early new wave. These one-hit groups were as diverse as the major artists, but they all shared a love of pop hooks, modernist, synthesized production, and a fascination for being slightly left of center.

If the question is, "What are some bands still around today that sound like bands that have existed during the New Wave?" then the list is endless and includes all of the bands we've mentioned.

I recently heard a new UK band called Union Beat who had Jam & Clash influences. I don't know if that counts as new-new wave or some kind of retro thing!
They have some tracks you can listen to on myspace:
