Apparently you've never heard their second album Into the Unknown. The one that went out of print and has never been reissued and the band probably pretends never happened.

I was a big fan of Bad Religion in '82. Still have the first album on vinyl bought that year. Google up some reviews of Into the Unknown. It really is that bad.

Why are there so many "other than this album" or "in spite of a couple of albums"-like comments in this thread. Don't those types of comments alone keep an artist from being considered consistent?

Yeah, never heard that one. I'm a fan of them from No Control through Stranger than Fiction, and also liked The Process of Belief and The Empire Strikes First. Some of the earlier stuff (i.e. what's on the 80-85 compilation is ok) but I prefer the above albums.

So I guess not entirely consistent, but that's 7 albums I really like which is close enough for me to put them on the list.

I'd agree for the most part, but would probably make an exception for comments like 'except for their first ____ album(s)'. Some bands take an album or two to gel and find their sound, but then go on to produce very consistent, quality material.

im a huge sublime fan but other than a few LBDA songs im really not a fan of other projects the band members were in. i cant even remember what the names of the bands were lol. yes you are right about their fanbase. for a band with only 3 studio cds (well one was recorded on a 4 track) its not hard to find people that list them as their fav band.

A buddy of mine is the biggest U2 fan, even has a tat to prove it! Anyway, Zooropa is his very favorite U2 album. You never can tell with music...as somebody said earlier, it's very subjective!

I like some of their stuff, but none of it really moves me. They kinda seem like a bland version of U2. They are definitely popular though.

I guess it would depend on the amount of work an artist has done, If somebody put out 15-20 albums and only 1 or 2 of them where bad, That would be pretty consistent.

Trash Can Sinatras only released four albums in a 14-year time span and every one of those recordings is a gem.

I'm sure it's "Endless Nameless", but I liked that one too.

Ill second Wilco, and say that unlike many others I enjoyed A Ghost is Born, not as much as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot but still a fine album.

Exactly. 1 clunker out of a dozen albums is a pretty consistent track record.

Ya know, I've really been trying to get my brain around the whole "consistent does not mean EVERY album" thing, and I'm just having a hard time giving in to the temptation of embracing that.

I WANNA put QUEEN in the running, and I actually only think 2 of their 15+ studio albums were sub par. BUT...I guess I'm trying to consider bands/artists that would be given like, 9.5 out of 10 on each of their albums.

Otherwise, the artist can be considered above average, or even great, but not totally consistent.

I guess I'm thinking in the same way I would write an employee review. If I give an "exceeds" to somebody, I need to be able to say that it's an ALWAYS kinda thing.

The admittedly unfair thing about being so rigid, is that the longer the career, the more experimental the music, the bigger chance they have of producing some "lower grade" material.

Maybe I need to loosen up! Feel bad for my employees!

The definition of consistent is Reliable; steady:, not perfect. Your employee may have overslept one day of the entire year but they would still have been very reliable on the whole.
