I believe the USA release of Ultra will be sometime in may 2007. I found Black Celebration at Virgin Megastore on sale for $19.99. Not bad. BB's price was around $22.99.

It's always been one of my favorite earlier DM releases. While I don't have a 5.1 setup at home, I'm anxious to do some A/B comparisons of the original studio CD when I get home later today. For somebody who doesn't collect alot of CD singles, the additional tracks are very welcome. Here's what you get:

Reviewers at amazon are absolutely SLAMMING MFTM, and SOFAD. Especially sofad, saying the remastered CD actually sound WORSE than the original pressing!!! WTF went wrong here? I was looking forward to hearing SOFAD(again, refering to the 2ch stereo CD) in all its remastered glory and after reading those reviews at amazon I dunno if I am anymore.

Can anyone weigh in their thoughts on the remasterd (CD)versions of SOFAD and MFTM? Is the audio really that bad?

SOFAD sounds awful in 5.1 And it's the worst of the remasters. Granted, I'm not a fan of the album at all. But it absolutely sucks now. MFTM is o.k. Not terrible.

I cannot wait for "Ultra" next month.

Maybe the abundance of instruments played on SOFAD is what contributed to the awful sound. Maybe the sound engineers didn't know how to handle the complexity of the varied sounds and instruments heard throughout the album

After the release date being pushed back at least three times, the last two remasters ("Ultra" and "Exciter") were released yesterday (10/2). "Ultra" sounds the best of the two. The first five tracks sound like a completely different album than the original. The vocals completely flesh out the songs more. There are instruments and sound effects I haven't heard before. A very unique experience. "Exciter" in 5.1 sounds almost identical to the original. Not worth your money IMO. And the B-sides and documentary aren't very exciting either. No pun. Not a great album to begin with.

How do Black Celebration and Violator sound? I'd be most interested in those two.

"Black Celebration" is the best of the remasters. They clearly spent the most time on this release. "Violator" is also great. Mainly because it has all the B-sides and a great documentary.

Exciter is one of my favorite Depeche Mode albums, but it's so recent I don't really see how much more fidelity we'd get from a remaster.

Well, the main attraction in these remasters is that they include a 5.1 surround mix. Something we didn't have before.

Finally got my Ultra and Exciter. Watched the Ultra documentary. You can tell that Fletcher is still very bitter at Alan. I can certainly see why Alan left the band, particularly at that time. Alan always seemed to be mistreated.

Are these re-release albums DVD-Audio or SACD? I have a DVDA player in my car with a 5.1 sound setup and was wondering if they would play.

The US releases are 1 Redbook CD and 1 regular DVD (not DVD-Audio).

The UK releases are 1 hybrid SACD and 1 regular DVD.

So it looks like you are out of luck, Edstein. Too bad.

Isn't DVD-Audio authored similarly to DVD-Video?

Since the DVD's in the US versions do contain 24/96 5.1 tracks, I wonder if the car player would autoplay them.

Oh and Edstein, I'm jealous! I would love to have lossless 5.1 in my car - it's where I do 99% of my listening.

System came standard in my 2005 Acura TL. The sub is a little weak but, overall sounds very good.
