Well, I should prefact that by saying I'm not a huge Nirvana fan and didn't get into them much until In Utero. I loved that album, and thus gave their older stuff another chance and it grew on me.

But I definitely put them behind Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains out of the Seattle "grunge" bands.

Wow, I entirely disagree. I like all three of those bands you named, but their music now does seem quite dated and one-note - Alice in Chains, to me, put out many variations on two or three basic songs. Nirvana experimented and was really something novel, IMHO.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Pearl Jam has been my favortie group since Ten came out in 1991, and you're opinion of AiC is basically mine of Nirvana.

Hell, I wouldn't even consider Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Alice In Chains "grunge"! "Grunge" to me was more like Mudhoney, Big Chief (first 3 singles), Tad, Seaweed, etc...

That's why i put "grunge" in quotes as that is 100% right, but in the mainstream venacular most people have never heard of the bands and consider PJ etc. grunge.

also, pearl jam also really expiraments in the studio, and hasn't released the same type of music every album.

The track list has been revealed for the upcoming Nirvana compilation first reported here earlier this week. “Sliver: The Best of the Box” will arrive Nov. 1 via Geffen/UME and is led by three previously unreleased tracks: “Spank Thru” from the famed 1985 “Fecal Matter” demo tape, the 1990 studio outtake “Sappy” and a pre-“Nevermind” rehearsal recording of “Come as You Are.”

The album's other 19 tracks are all drawn from the 2004 boxed set “With the Lights Out,” including a cover of Led Zeppelin's “Heartbreaker” from a 1987 house party, the “Nevermind” outtake “Old Age” and a 1994 Kurt Cobain home demo of “All Apologies.”

I have the box and have the 3 additional tracks downloaded, but the completist in me is going to have to buy this...damn it!!!! I loves me some Nirvana, so I shouldn't complain...

MATT

I'm also going to add fuel to the fire, saying that I agree with josh and rypro about PJ... one of my favourites of all time, and IMO better and more diverse than Nirvana.

Just a note about the Japanese version of this disc which arrived today. I ordered my copy from wwww.cdjapan.co.jp. It does NOT have any exclusive bonus tracks (unlike many Japanese releases). However it does come with the (almost) requisite Japanese language insert that includes the lyrics to each song in English (and Japanese)! In addition, my copy came with a 20 x 30 inch promotional poster! This is meant to be packaged with this CD as it says "not for sale" and has the same stock number as the cd (UICZ-1190). I did not expect this and it's a really good, kind of grainy b/w close-up image of the band. Oh yeah, and the music's killer too (for those who don't have the box set).
