Of course, I'm not a 15-year old girl, the target audience for Mariah Carey, I believe.

Well, besides cluttering up Music Talk with inane threads and hogging the front page.

There's very little "Female" left. Earlier versions of Madonna were sexier.

Even though I like Emancipation of Mimi, I gotta say that Mariah needs the studio now and her live perfomances indicate she has lost much of her voice and is reduced to breathy and strained perfomances. Christina has still got her voice and kills every time.
Mariah's commecial success is partly voice, and partly marketing. (Duh). That she writes or contributes almost all of her lyrics is a key to her success.
They are both hot, though.

Hmmm, I still think Mariah is a better singer than Madonna, Alison or even Christina. I think Christina HAS a good voice but theres only so much of it you can take. On the other hand, you can sit thru an entire Mariah CD and still want more (ie the 'Butterfly' album - best R&B CD of the 90s for sure)

I won't deny Mariah Carey's talent, or Christina Aguilera's either, for that matter.
They are both incredibly talented and gifted vocalists, who can really hit those notes.
But I would rather listen to the pure beauty of Sinead O'Connor and Sarah McLachlan's singing any day, and everyday, of the week.

She may have a totally different style, but as far as the best female vocalist I have to go with Ann Wilson. She has an incredibly powerful voice and can sing kick ass Rock and Rol as well as pop ballads equally well.

The problem with Mariah is she has a very solid voice, and I think she is one of the best female singers ever, but how she uses it is where the problem is.
She has some nice songs, catchy and poppy, and she has others that just don't work as well as they should work.
I think with her voice, it's the music she puts behind it, or even with no music that is when her beautiful singing voice is at it's very best, and has an impact on the listener.
Like some of those songs she did with rap, with a voice like hers, what is she doing with that around her.
When she sings from her heart, there is basically nobody better.
When she sings with rappers in her music, take your pick.

I don't consider Mariah Carey a pop singer. She turned R&B. Does she have the best vocals? I dunno. She use to be really good, but lately I don't know. Then again, I think her new songs are highly annoying (especially when they are played every hour on the hour on every radio station).
Madonna and Spears are still in the pop category. Neither of them have great vocals. Madonna is better singing wise but not by too much. They both breathe, pant, and have layered vocals and sound much more "raw" and "deep" when I have seen them singing on tv live than they do on the recorded album tracks.
As for Christina Aguilera she sounds like she needs to use the bathroom when blasting out those notes. Truly scary and harsh on the ears. She over-sings.
I don't care who is the best singer, I want to see them jump around in their skimpy outfits. So the younger the better.

I haven't listened to her in a while. Now I know what I'm doing after work.

Mariah's vocals have gradually grown weaker as she's gotten into her 30's. I still really like her though. The Emancipation of MiMi was IMO her best CD since Butterfly.

Yes I thought she was good in her early years but I sense a deterioration recently. She's getting some of that hoarseness in hers which could indicate a degeneratiion or some other condition. Elton John similarly went from beautiful to hoarse.

She is not the biggest selling female artist of all time like she likes to be addressed. That title belongs to a greek singer named Nana Mouskouri. She has sold more than Mariah. After her it's someone I never heard of, then Celine Dion, another lady, then Madonna, then someone else, and Mariah who is behind Madonna by 20 million albums but that may change since these numbers don't take in effect her latest album.
