Terence Trent D'arby's "Introducing the Hardline Acording to Terence Trent D'Arby". Simply put this is a perfect record. Fans were turned off by his humungous ego and his claim that this album was the best album since Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life"(which I have to agree he is correct on). While nobody likes egos, he certainly backed it up with classic material. I would also reccomend his last album 2003's "Wildcard" as well. Many never heard the album, but its his best work since 1987's debut "Introducing..." and features some of D'arby's best lyrics and music. Wonderful album, that few have heard sadly!

The Tension and the Spark
The Tension and the Spark by Darren Hayes
not released in the USA but very worth importing |
I also think "Impossible Princess", the 1997 CD By Kylie Minogue remains an electronica masterpiece to this day. In eight years it has not dated at all! Amazing work.

My brother's band, My Middle Finger, plays Dogman (the song) in their set occasionally. They even played it when opening for King's X one time (they opened for them twice, and for Poundhound once). Dogman is one of those albums that makes you wonder, "if a band is too good can it hurt their commercial appeal?" In the case of King's X you'd certainly think so. |

There are two schools to the term "underrated". One is albums that are critically ignored, but good. The other is albums that may be critically hailed but not generally appreciated or are commercial flops.
For one of the all-timers from that second school, may I present : http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg Not a single song from this album has ever made it onto a major Elton compilation (it's barely even represented in the box set), yet it's a master work. Maybe Cameron Crowe will stoke up some interest by using "My Father's Gun" as the theme for Elizabethtown. And for the first school, I'm very partial to : http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg It's a beautiful, deeply personal album. But no critic would ever give a  to Kenny freakin' Loggins, so I consider it an underrated masterpiece |
Dino : 24/7
Now THIS was a pop masterpiece back in the day.
I think I am also rather partial to most albums by Dionne Warwick, Marilyn ("Despite Straight Lines") and think those are semi-underrated. Also, Lisa Gerrard - "The Mirror Pool" and "Duality" are amazing underrated albums. |
