What about the soundtrack to 'The Witches of Eastwick'?

Don't know how you quantify "underrated", I'm sure these are well known and appreciated in certain circles...The Rooks - A Wishing Well, Vulgar Boatmen - You and Your Sister are pretty obscure in my circle. My fave that almost none of my acquaintances know about is Junior Wells - Hoodoo Man Blues. I would also mention The Shoes - Boomerang but that is probably a result of some unknown head trauma/side effect in my past.

One of the 10 best Heavy Metal albums of all time. Brilliant. As for the most underrated Jazz album.... http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/3...ichroar9ar.jpg The greatest drummer of all time leading the most powerful Jazz big band ever! 'Nuff said! |

His self-titled debut is probably his densest, least accessible work, but also (IMHO) his most rewarding. It's one of those rare albums that not only sounds better each time I listen to it, but I get a different listening experience out of it each time, depending on what I bring to it. edit: For BTP Spoiler:

Tim The Rooks are good. Never really heard VB or JW. I love all of (there's no The in the name) Shoes output. |

The Pixies Doolittle
It gets some credit but basically, anything interesting that came after 1989 was influenced, from one degree to another, by this album. And I swear, it's damn hard to find The Pixies anticedent to it. I know what their influences were but try to find something that sounds genuinely similar to it prior to it's release. Astonishing shite. |
Also be sure to check out the Black Keys Rubber Factory

Kind of goes from more R&B to Rock, but not exclusively. Have you heard any of the b-sides from the first album's singles? They're more along the lines of (obviously) the stuff from his S/T, but a lot more experimental. If you like the rock stuff (Yeah, etc.) I'd highly recommend picking up The Lost Album. It's an incredible album, showcasing more of his rock influences. It's pretty amazing, he still hasn't made any two albums alike. His progression has been like this: Lewis I: psychedelic soul b-sides: experimental Lewis II: funk Limited Edition 2000: acoustic, covers Stoned Part I: house/dance Stoned Part II: pop Limited Edition 2004: odds&ends The Lost Album: rock Personally, I can't wait to see what's next. |
Hmm...I would say there's a few that I'd have trouble choosing from...
Deftones - White Pony - sure, it's their best-selling album, and their biggest commercial hit to date, but it really tosses it in the face of everyone who thinks they're just some band to be lumped in with Korn and such, which they never were, never will be. A lot of people write this band off, and when they listen to this CD, they are just blown away. It shows the versatility of this band... Prince Paul - Prince of Theives - This album is a fricken hip-hop opera. A concept album that's just simply brilliant. I wanted to put Handsome Boy Modeling School on this list, but Prince of Theives just outshines it with the concept...A day in the life of a kid in the 'hood. Lovage - Music to Make love to your old lady by - Pure brilliance. Automator, Mike Patton, Jennifer Charles, and Deltron (among others). This CD is pure sex. |

Wow, I dont even know half these albums. What about female singer songwriters and musicals? This years "Wicked" is really underrated, and I'd have to say that "Who will cut our hair when we're gone" by THE UNICORNS is another amazing masterpiece.
Then theres "Young Forever" by Aberfeldy and "How the Mighty Fall" by Mark Owen |

(For Cottington)
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg Belly - Star This one may actually be pretty well repected but I'd like to see it mentioned with the same reverance as some people talk about The Pixies and the like. Star is a flawless album. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg Belinda Carlisle - Real Simply a great overlooked album in her solo career, and my personal favorite of hers. Not to be missed. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg Mary's Danish - Circa Talk about overlooked. This album rocks. This Amazon.com review says it best: "One of my all-time favourite albums. Should have been huge. Catchy as hell, musically ambitious, sweet sweet vocals..... I can't believe this band didn't take-over the world. WORTH HUNTING DOWN AT ANY COST." http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg Erin Mckeown - Grand Beautiful singer/songwriter folk album full of jems. Shows a wide range- "Cinematic" is loud and punkish, while "Born to Hum" is beautiful and understated. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg Leona Naess - Leona Naess She got some press for her debut album, but fell out of the spotlight before releasing this, her third and best album. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg Vitamin C - More Surely you already have this one though, Cottington? |
Everclear - Songs From An American Movie: Part I Learning How To Smile

A few more: While not a "great" album in the sense being used hear, New Radical's "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too" is very well produced album. You could say after that after a point, the production becomes the art form. Also, The Avalanches "Since I Met You" All samples and beats, and just a great album. |
