You can't go wrong with Ani DiFranco.
Her first run of albums is excellent: Ani DiFranco, Imperfectly, Not So Soft, Puddle Dive, Out of Range, Not a Pretty Girl, Dilate, Living in Clip (Live), and Little Plastic Castle.
Her earlier albums are very much straight-up folk, just a girl with an acoustic guitar, but her sound evolved into a more rock/jazzy direction on her later albums.
Also check out Kristin Sweetland. Excellent guitar player with cerebral, abstract lyrics.
