I saw Alice in Chains open for Kiss. They got boo'd off the stage. They got all pissed off so the drummer went into some horrid rendition of Beth and then proceeded to tell the crowd to basically fuck off, then they left the stage.

I saw this Salsa/Rock band open for Iron Maiden a few years back. I was like what the fuck? I think people were to freaked to even boo.
I think the most uncomfortable i've been during an opening act was when I saw that Bonnie Prince Billy as one of the opening bands for Bjork. I mean his music was THE MOST depressing shit I've ever heard. I mean you literally just wanted to kill yourself listening to his shit. It was just him and a autoharp or some weird instrument. Everytime he started a new song the boos got louder and you could hear loud groaning all over.
But I'll give him credit...he didn't act like wuss and stop the show. He kept on doing his thing as if the crowd didn't matter and finished his set. When I read fan reviews of the tour on Bjork's site there were HUGE debates over how much he sucked and "how Bjork fans should just accept him because bjork apparently loves him and booing him is disrespectful to her." This guy was getting booed at just about every show.

My vote would be for most of the bands who have opened for Rush. They never could seem to get something appropriate. The last time I saw them with an opening act was when they toured with Mr. Big. Pointless.

Maybe the weirdest club lineup I saw was Daniel Lanois, Scruffy the Cat and 5440 one night in '89. And the odd thing is they played in that order. Should have been the exact opposite.

Well I think suck ass music crosses all tastes and Bonnie Prince Billy's music is waaaay out there.
I'm glad RUSH doesn't have opening bands anymore. You get a longer show. My favorite RUSH opener was Primus and the worst was Tommy Shaw. Shaw was boring as hell.

Let me also say that Smashing Pumpkins opening for KISS at Dodger Stadium was kinda weird too.

I can't even remember. I agree they weren't bed but it did little to get me pumped for Maiden.

Gotta add Ted Nugent for Kiss.
So far Kiss seems to have the most ecclectic selection of openers.

One that I saw was STP booed off the stage opening up for Megadeth. That show was what got me into STP.
A weird one that I saw was Grace Jones opening up for RUN-DMC.

Strangest one was at a Dr. Hook concert. The opening band was called CHEESE. It was really just Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show in disguise. When CHEESE was done they went backstage, took off the disguises, changed clothes and came back out as Dr. Hook. Everybody freaked.
In the before they were famous category saw:
Aerosmith open for Lynard Skynard
Bob Seger for Blue Oyster Cult
John Cougar for The Kinks
Rush for Ted Nugent
Van Halen for Black Sabbath
In the surreal category:
The 1974 Homecoming concert at our high school was Journey(pre-Steve Perry) and Styx(pre-Tommy Shaw), in the high school auditorium. We had heard of Styx and I had their last two LPs but had never heard of Journey. The very same night Steppenwolf and REO Speedwagon were playing downtown. Me and everybody I knew went to that instead. I remember the teachers trying to talk us into going to the homecoming concert instead because nobody was buying tickets.
In the summer of '75 went to see Loggins and Messina with The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. It was general admission so if you got there early you got right down in front. The show was at a downtown movie theater that was no longer used to show movies, just events. A buddy and I jumped the gun and got there way to early. Nobody else around, deserted downtown on a late sunday afternoon. We rolled a few joints and stood on the street corner smoking, with a view from all angles in case a cop came by. This guy came walking down the street towards us. Long hair, t-shirt, big bells. I thought, "this guy looks familiar, where do I know him from?" He came up to us and asked for a hit off our joint, which we gave him. The entire time I was trying to think of who this guy was. He was a few years older than us so I figuired he must be somebody's older brother or just some guy I had seen around at parties. He went on his way and I forget about it. Finally the doors open and we get right down in the front row. When the lights went out for Ozark Mt. Daredevils the announcer says that The Ozark Mountain Daredevils couldn't make it for some reason I can't remember, and then says, "In their place we have THE FORMER LEAD SINGER OF REO SPEEDWAGON...KEVIN CRONIN!!!!" The lights go up on Cronin with an acoutic guitar and he breaks into "Music Man". I thought" That's who that guy is." True Story.
