system of a down to tour with mars volta, possible bad move?

there are going to probably be a ton of metal heads and what not at the show, but with the mars volta opening, i can easily see many getting restless if they don't know what they are getting into. (the mars volta are more of an arty, early pink floyd type band then a heavy prog nu metal band like system of a down.

I would say yes. System is a very fast paced and aggressive live show. The Mars Volta tend to drag their songs out very long. And with their new album I could see many songs going to 20 / 30 minutes a piece.

Hey, I've wanted to see both...so killing two birds with one stone is great. I'm sure casual fans of SoaD wouldn't mind this show.

Same here. I think it's a killer bill. Just wish it was in a smaller venue. Arenas =

If SOAD concerts sound like they did on SNL you'd be better off if I taped the sound of me shitting and sent it to you.

good mixture if you ask em.. i'd love to see that show. i think they compliment each other very well.. system of a down is hardly "metal" i doubt only metalheads will be at their concert.. they are more similar than you give credit even though one has shorter and one longer songs.

So how is it a thread crap when I ask if they suck live like they did on SNL or if they are actually good live? Sorry for questioning the great SOAD.

Maybe because you didn't ask if they were good live. You made a statement that if they were as bad as you perceived them to be on SNL then fans would be better off listening to your daily strains on the toilet. And I'm not a big fan of SoaD, just answering your question.

Maybe they had an off night. They played live on Conan after their first album came out and they were pretty good.

If people leave the show because of not liking Mars Volta, then they are idiots anyway. More often than not openin acts are simply there because they need to capitalize on the exposure of the main event. In this case, I think it is a good move to have Mars Volta open for System of a Down. Good for Mars Volta, that is. I really can't see this affecting System of a Down much.

I generally don't care who the opening act is. If I don't like them, and I have a reserved seat (i.e. not pit or lawn) I'll just arrive later, or drink in the parking lot longer.

I'm not in love with either band, but I like them both. I think they make for a good, interesting double-bill - they're both considered to be modern progressive-rock - why shouldn't they be on the same bill? Are fans really that narrow-minded?

If you think this billing is weird, what about Sum 41 opening for Motley Crue???

I could honestly see drunken motorcycle-gang members throwing bottles during their set.

The Mars Volta sound like Pink Floyd, and I can guarantee you, many fans of SoaD like Pink Floyd and at the bare minimum, can tolerate The Mars Volta. 40 year old Crue fans will not tolerate the "punk" of Sum 41.

I don't understand the logic that says two bands who tour together must have an identical sound and style. These are two of my favorite bands, and this would be a great concert.

Count me in as one who is going mostly for The Mars Volta. Their album is actually pretty fascinating. It has taken some time to get into it, and I use 'get into' kind of loosely. There aren't really any hooks, nothing to sing to myself later on, and it's next to impossible to turn other people on to it. Unless those people respect your opinion of music, and will try whatever you throw their way.

I dunno, I was listening to the new SOAD yesterday, and my brother just said "this shit is totally fruitier than their other albums." So, there may be a chance that a lot of the meathead SOAD fans are turned off enough by their new sound to not go to the shows.

Here's hoping!
