Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
http://www.typeonegative.net/
The band's official website has put a tombstone on the front page that reads: PETER STEELE FREE AT LAST 1962-2005 I seem to recall he had some health issues that interfered with their tour last fall. |
What!?!?! I had just pulled out a Type O Negative cd this week. I guess they were on my mind. To be honest I didn't know the individual members but I always liked their music.:(
I hope it's a joke. RIP |
I did a google search and found nothing. I hope this is a joke too. The last thing I found on their site through google was that his health was improving, I had no idea he was sick.
|
Despite a message on the band's official web site that seems to suggest otherwise, TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele HAS NOT DIED.
The band, who are famous for their dark sense of humor, have spent much of the last few months preparing material for their SPV Records debut, which is expected to be recorded later in the year. TYPE O NEGATIVE cancelled their U.S. tour last fall in order to allow Steele to undergo further tests after "undisclosed anomalies" were discovered during a medical exam. A February 11, 2005 update on Peter's condition from TYPE O NEGATIVE drummer Johnny Kelly stated, "There really isn't much to report other than he's doing fine and his health is improving daily." TYPE O NEGATIVE, whose first album, "Slow, Deep and Hard", was issued in 1991, fulfilled their contractual obligations to longtime label Roadrunner with the release of 2003's "Life Is Killing Me". That album debuted on The Billboard 200 chart at No. 39 in June 2003 after registering a first-week sales tally of 27,023 copies. TYPE O NEGATIVE's best-selling album to date is 1994's "Bloody Kisses", which has shifted around nearly a million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. http://www.roadrun.com/blabbermouth....wsitemID=36711 |
Good deal. I like Type O quite a bit. It'd be a bummer to see Peter go.
|
I think my favorite is The Origin of the Feces (the live album where he's pissing off the crowd and they are chanting "you suck" etc.).
Great band. |

Great dark metal.
|
When I saw them, they were boring as hell. Great music, but very boring live. The crowd didn't help any, they were all pissy and trying to prove something by not moving or cheering.
|
So, what was it, a Friday the 13th prank?
|
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Well unfortunately it's looking like 5 years later this could be true. Check out Blabbermouth - several people are reporting it happened today. Nothing official yet but this time it feels like it is real.
Very sad if true. Type O has had a huge influence on me musically. The prospect of no more records is depressing to say the least. |
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Yeah I'm seeing a bunch of RIP Peter Steel on facebook.

Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Shit, that truly sucks.
|
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
That does suck :(
Every little while I dive back into Type O and really enjoy them. Ironically, "Are You Afraid" came up on my random playlist yesterday. Granted, I know lots of their stuff deals with somber topics. He was only 48 or so. That's too young. |

Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
I just listened to Bloody Kisses again about a week ago. Great, distinct voice.
He was born in '62, so he was about 48. |
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Type O have been my favorite band since I saw them open for Danzig on Halloween night '94. I'm at a complete loss for words right now. I still don't want to believe it's true.

I saw them a cpl of times live and even met them after one of their shows. They all seemed pretty cool. I truly hope this turns out to be another prank by the band as they were really big on pranks, if not, this is another sad day for music fans. |
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
I had just spun their discography last week. This is the first time a musician from a favorite of mine has passed. Cobain - meh. Didn't really care for Nirvana. Layne Staley dying was a bummer but AIC was long defunct at that point.
I was really hoping for another Type O record this year or next year. The band has to be done now - their is no substitute. All we have are the great records they've already done. RIP Pete. :( |
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
I never got into Type O Negative other than Bloody Kisses. I loved the hell out of that album. I saw them open for Queensryche back in '94 or '95. Sad news indeed.

Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
I wonder what the guys are gonna do now? Kenny and Johnny have Seventh Void, plus they both do stints in Danzig from time to time. Josh will probably be an EMT since he just finished schooling for that. I'm gonna miss Pete's morbid sense of humor.

Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Wow. I had always heard of this band, but never listened to them. After seeing this thread I have spent the better part of the morning listening to their stuff. Boy have I been missing out all these years, I love what I am hearing.

Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Max,
What have you been spinning? |
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Dammitall. Type O is one of my favorite bands, and I've loved almost all of their albums. I was hoping to try out their live shows again, since they sped up their music a bit, and would probably put on a more engaging experience. After Peter became sober, I was looking forward to several more kick-ass albums, and here is where he ends up. Peter had a great sense of humor, and I loved listening to his interviews, at least the sober and coherent ones towards the latter part of his life.
Being selfish, it sucks we won't get any more music from this awesome band. Unselfishly, I'm glad he obtained the clarity of sobriety for a few years before he died, and I hope his family and friends get through this with minimal damage. Considering the stereotypical fanbase for this band, I also hope people don't get all dramatic with the news. October Rust and World Coming Down are two of the best albums in the "gothic" genre. I've tried for years to find something comparable, but haven't succeeded. All Type O today, in "honor" of the news. |

Max,
What have you been spinning? Bloody Kisses and Dead Again. I enjoyed the former much more than the latter. Black No. 1 is awesome. |
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Give October Rust a listen. It's my fav overall album by them, and you should enjoy it if you like Bloody Kisses.

Also, Type O Negative opening for Pantera was my first ever concert. This band will be missed. R.I.P. Peter |

This is my favorite by them as well. Such a perfectly named album too. I put this one on once that Fall cripness hits the air and listen to it in the week's leading up to Halloween. It's especially great music for that time of year. r

Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Nice to see I'm not the only one who rings in Fall with October Rust; it's a flawless album, and it's so soothing to enjoy on those crisp autumn nights.
First time I saw Type O Negative was when they opened for Danzig on Halloween night '94 @ Irvine Meadows in support of Bloody Kisses. I ran out the next day and bought that album; they've been my favorite band ever since. |
Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
My only time seeing them live was in '96 at the Vic in Chicago with Life of Agony opening. I think that was when Pete had a big upright bass on like a normal bass. Loved the stage setup for that tour.

Re: Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)
Well this officially sucks, wake up and read this news. Type O is one of my top 3 favorite bands and I can't actually believe the news. I actually had been looking for news about them about two weeks ago, cause I know they usually release an album every 3-4 years. I was hoping they had started recording something, but like typical Type O there was little news. Regardless I'll never forget traveling to any venue within about 6 hours to see them, the only band I have seen in 7 different states. Some of my best memories growing up were with those road trips with my cousin to see them play. October Rust is still my favorite album, but all of them are good. Especially Origin of Feces with the fake live crowd. Still some of the funniest stuff I've ever heard.
RIP Peter. |
