Peter Steele dead? (Type O Negative)

The band's official website has put a tombstone on the front page that reads:
PETER STEELE
FREE AT LAST
1962-2005
I seem to recall he had some health issues that interfered with their tour last fall.

What!?!?! I had just pulled out a Type O Negative cd this week. I guess they were on my mind. To be honest I didn't know the individual members but I always liked their music.
I hope it's a joke.
RIP

I did a google search and found nothing. I hope this is a joke too. The last thing I found on their site through google was that his health was improving, I had no idea he was sick.

Despite a message on the band's official web site that seems to suggest otherwise, TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele HAS NOT DIED.
The band, who are famous for their dark sense of humor, have spent much of the last few months preparing material for their SPV Records debut, which is expected to be recorded later in the year.
TYPE O NEGATIVE cancelled their U.S. tour last fall in order to allow Steele to undergo further tests after "undisclosed anomalies" were discovered during a medical exam. A February 11, 2005 update on Peter's condition from TYPE O NEGATIVE drummer Johnny Kelly stated, "There really isn't much to report other than he's doing fine and his health is improving daily."
TYPE O NEGATIVE, whose first album, "Slow, Deep and Hard", was issued in 1991, fulfilled their contractual obligations to longtime label Roadrunner with the release of 2003's "Life Is Killing Me". That album debuted on The Billboard 200 chart at No. 39 in June 2003 after registering a first-week sales tally of 27,023 copies. TYPE O NEGATIVE's best-selling album to date is 1994's "Bloody Kisses", which has shifted around nearly a million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

When I saw them, they were boring as hell. Great music, but very boring live. The crowd didn't help any, they were all pissy and trying to prove something by not moving or cheering.

So, what was it, a Friday the 13th prank?

Well unfortunately it's looking like 5 years later this could be true. Check out Blabbermouth - several people are reporting it happened today. Nothing official yet but this time it feels like it is real.
Very sad if true. Type O has had a huge influence on me musically. The prospect of no more records is depressing to say the least.

That does suck
Every little while I dive back into Type O and really enjoy them. Ironically, "Are You Afraid" came up on my random playlist yesterday. Granted, I know lots of their stuff deals with somber topics.
He was only 48 or so. That's too young.

I just listened to Bloody Kisses again about a week ago. Great, distinct voice.
He was born in '62, so he was about 48.

Type O have been my favorite band since I saw them open for Danzig on Halloween night '94. I'm at a complete loss for words right now. I still don't want to believe it's true.

I second that notion.
I saw them a cpl of times live and even met them after one of their shows. They all seemed pretty cool. I truly hope this turns out to be another prank by the band as they were really big on pranks, if not, this is another sad day for music fans.

I had just spun their discography last week. This is the first time a musician from a favorite of mine has passed. Cobain - meh. Didn't really care for Nirvana. Layne Staley dying was a bummer but AIC was long defunct at that point.
I was really hoping for another Type O record this year or next year. The band has to be done now - their is no substitute. All we have are the great records they've already done. RIP Pete.

I never got into Type O Negative other than Bloody Kisses. I loved the hell out of that album. I saw them open for Queensryche back in '94 or '95. Sad news indeed.

I wonder what the guys are gonna do now? Kenny and Johnny have Seventh Void, plus they both do stints in Danzig from time to time. Josh will probably be an EMT since he just finished schooling for that. I'm gonna miss Pete's morbid sense of humor.

Wow. I had always heard of this band, but never listened to them. After seeing this thread I have spent the better part of the morning listening to their stuff. Boy have I been missing out all these years, I love what I am hearing.
