Re: studio albums that are a "Greatest Hits" all by themselves
Too bad Creedence Clearwater Revival hasn't been mentioned. Probably because, although they have a lot of great songs, they're all spread out on many albums. I'm not really into that blusey-rock that is "filler" on their albums.
but the closest would have to be Cosmo's Factory from 1970.
Great tracks include highlighted:
"Ramble Tamble" – 7:10
"Before You Accuse Me" (Bo Diddley) – 3:27
"Travelin' Band" – 2:07 ‡
"Ooby Dooby" (Wade Moore, Dick Penner) – 2:07
"Lookin' Out My Back Door" – 2:35
"Run Through the Jungle" – 3:10 †
[edit] Side two
"Up Around the Bend" – 2:42 †
"My Baby Left Me" (Arthur Crudup) – 2:19
"Who'll Stop the Rain" – 2:29 ‡
"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong) – 11:07
"Long as I Can See the Light" – 3:33
That's 7 out of 10, which qualifies in my book.
the other songs aren't my cup of tea, nor were they hits. Granted, "Long As I Can See The Light" wasn't a hit, but it became a standard due to "Chronicle." And "Before You Accuse Me" is just a great song, hit or no hit.

EDIT: I Heard It Through the Grapevine is a great song and it was a bit of a hit.

Re: studio albums that are a "Greatest Hits" all by themselves
Outside of maybe a few tracks off With The Beatles, Beatles For Sale and White Album (even then I'd argue the case that at least 75-80% of that album is well-known to any music fan), pretty much everything The Beatles have recorded are well-known amongst any serious music lover. Even if you've never owned a copy of Rubber Soul or Revolver, if you heard the album start to finish you'd realize you probably know every song on there. So yes, I would argue that pretty much their entire discography plays as hits collections. After all, Elvis has had dozens of hits collections if not more. So the same could be used for The Beatles. So no, I don't apologize for saying their entire discography is one large Greatest Hits package, because if consumers didn't agree with me, all of their albums wouldn't still sell so well.

Re: studio albums that are a "Greatest Hits" all by themselves
I don't think the quality of the album is the point. Most every track of the album was a hit single.

Ah, now I get it. I totally misunderstood what the OP wanted. I thought this thread was about albums so chock full of great songs (subjective, of course) that they could pass for "greatest hits" albums.

Does anybody else think Tom Petty's Long After Dark sounds like one hit song after another even though there was only the one hit, You Got Lucky. Every song sounds like it's structured as a single.

Re: studio albums that are a "Greatest Hits" all by themselves
I might have missed the point, but the way I interpreted this was to name an album that might as well be GH because many of the artist's hits were on it. So, I picked a group like The Wallflowers because they barely had any hits (if they had any at all) outside of their big album.
